Judge To Hear Arguments For And Against NFL Concussion Settlement

Counsel for the NFL and thousands of retirees today in Philadelphia federal court are set to defend the preliminary settlement of hundreds of concussion lawsuits filed against the league. Judge Anita Brody, who has preliminarily approved the class action deal, is widely expected to give it final approval, though likely not today. In all, 18 people are allocated time to speak today for a combined 325 minutes. Over half the time goes to the NFL's lawyer, Brad Karp, and settlement counsel Chris SeegerSteve Molo, a lawyer spearheading opposition to the deal, will argue it should cover chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and other ailments.

The deal is expected to pay out a minimum of $765M over 65 years. Just over 200 players opted out of the deal, or less than 1% of the total. They can file individual lawsuits against the league, but are not represented at today's hearing.
