All Eyes On Astros, Brady Aiken As MLB Signing Deadline Nears

Today marks the signing deadline for '14 MLB draft picks, and "most of the attention will center" on the Astros' No. 1 overall selection, P Brady Aiken. The Astros have offered Aiken 40% of the allotment, $3,168,840, "so if they don't sign him they would receive a selection" in the '15 draft as compensation. The other unsigned first-rounders are P Sean Newcomb (Angels) and P Erick Fedde (Nationals). Newcomb, "advised by Legacy Sports Group, is expected to sign" (BASEBALLAMERICA.com, 7/17).

The HOUSTON CHRONICLE's Evan Drellich writes there is "no greater drama in baseball at the moment" than the signing deadline. Terms must be submitted to Commissioner Bud Selig's office by 4:00pm CT, "and that can be done by e-mail" (CHRON.com, 7/17).
