Laugh Track....Sparing No One

Last night rapper Drake hosted the '14 ESPY Awards on ESPN and the following is a sampling of his opening monologue, "I love all of you, until you start losing. Then you're dead to me." Drake noted new Cavaliers F LeBron James is returning to Cleveland for two years and $40M, noting, "Some people are happy about it, some people aren't happy. Me personally, I think it makes sense financially. You know what $40 million gets you in Miami? A really nice house. You know what $40 million gets you in Cleveland? Cleveland. All of it. ... I think everybody's excited (about James going to Cleveland), maybe everybody except for Johnny Manziel because it seems like in one day, Johnny Manziel went from the biggest thing in Cleveland to a guy who lives in Cleveland. But you know, I love me some 'Johnny Football,' baby, I do. I mean, I worry about him sometimes. For example, right before I came out here I got a text from him asking if I wanted to do mushrooms and watch the ESPYs together tonight. Johnny, I hope you understand, this is why I couldn't come. But I'm sure this looks amazing to you right now." Drake said to celebrate winning the NBA championship, the Spurs "all stayed up past 10:00pm and shared a beer. Just one." Drake noted some L.A. Kings players were in the audience and said, "In fact, we're just a couple hundred yards from Staples Center, which also happens to be as close as Donald Sterling is allowed to get." Drake said of the World Cup, "This year it was in Brazil, the plastic surgery capital of the world which is great because after the way Brazil played, there are 11 guys that need to look way different as soon as possible." Drake said the Seahawks' "fans are incredible. If CenturyLink Field was any louder, Russell Westbrook would be wearing it." Drake said of racial comments by Eagles WR Riley Cooper and former Dolphins OL Richie Incognito, "There is no room for racism in the NFL, unless you own a team in Washington, D.C." Drake said of UConn winning the men's and women's NCAA Tournaments, "You will always have those memories forever. Well, technically the NCAA owns the memories but at least you got the meal plan" ("ESPYs," ESPN, 7/16).

NBC’s Jimmy Fallon: “President Obama called German Chancellor Angela Markel yesterday to talk about improving relations with our country after this latest spying scandal. Obama made her a pretty good offer. He said, ‘Look, we'll stop spying if we can borrow your soccer team.’ ... During last night's All-Star Game, CBS News sent a tweet out that called Derek JeterMichael Jeter.’ This is real. ‘Michael Jeter takes bow at his final All-Star Game.’ It wasn't the only tweet that CBS News has sent recently that was a little off. Look at this one right here. ‘Germs win World Cup against Argo & Tina.’ ... I just saw that minor league baseball players have filed a class-action lawsuit to demand better pay, as opposed to the other way they could get better pay: Being better at baseball. ... There’s a new report out and it shows supermodel Gisele Bündchen made $47 million in the last year. It gets weird when Tom Brady gets his paycheck and she's like, ‘Good for you. I'll take you to the mall and get you something nice’” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 7/16).

CBS’ David Letterman: “(Mayor Bill de Blasio has) only been mayor for a couple of weeks and he's vacationing in Italy for three weeks. While he's gone the city will be run by Carmelo Anthony. ... Derek Jeter, what a career, what a guy. The Yankee captain went out at the top of his game. Don't you hate guys who do that? A woman in the audience at the All-Star game said to Derek Jeter, ‘Well, what are you going to do now that you are retiring?’ He said, ‘I'm going back to Cleveland’” (“Late Show,” CBS, 7/16).
