Torrential Rain Flooding Recife Ahead Of U.S.-Germany Match

A torrential rain storm has hit Recife, Brazil, the site of today’s U.S.-Germany World Cup match, and ESPN’s Taylor Twellman wrote on Twitter the city is “under water.” Twellman, who is scheduled to call the game with Ian Darke, wrote, “Will be extremely difficult for everyone to get to stadium hour outside the city.” USAToday.com’s Mike Foss wrote, “Recife is flooding currently. Going to be a pretty great adventure getting to the stadium an hour away.” SI.com’s Grant Wahl: “Epic rainstorm & traffic jam in Recife. Just went shin-deep in water. Stadium far out of town. Just hoping our bus makes it to game.” The Washington Post’s Steven Goff: “Odds on 0-0 draw rising quicker than flood waters” (TWIITER.com, 6/26).

NBC's Al Roker said the forecast for the noon kickoff is "not great," with a 90% chance of "heavy rain" and high humidity. Roker said, "They generally will not cancel a game because of weather, but … it's up to the referee to determine the condition of the field, and that field is known for very poor drainage." NBC's Savannah Guthrie referenced the popular motto associated with the U.S. team, saying, "We believe that it will rain" ("Today," NBC, 6/26).
