Candlestick Park Likely Hosting Final Event With Tonight's "MNF" Game

The 49ers will host the Falcons for tonight’s “MNF” game, which likely “marks the end of Candlestick Park’s 42-year tenure as the team’s home stadium.” With the 49ers moving to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara next year, Candlestick Park is “slated for demolition as early as next fall” (SACRAMENTO BEE, 12/22). Tonight's game will be the 36th "MNF" game at Candlestick, "the most of any stadium in NFL history" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 12/23).

The S.F. CHRONICLE’s Ron Kroichick writes Candlestick “was a true Bay Area original, known as much for its rampant quirkiness as the stage for feats of athletic grandeur.” The SACRAMENTO BEE’s Matt Kawahara writes the venue “provided the backdrop to many iconic moments in this city’s storied sporting history.” ESPN provides some remembrances of “the historic but uncomfortable hunk of cement by the bay.” The SACRAMENTO BEE offers an Op-Ed under the header, “The ‘Stick Was A Tough Place To Watch A Game But Millions Did.”
