DC Council Calls On Redskins To Change Team Moniker

The DC Council yesterday issued the latest challenge to the Redskins' name when they voted "overwhelmingly" to "call on the team to change it, saying it is widely recognized as 'racist and derogatory.'" The version of the resolution approved by the council was "worded less strongly than the original, which called the team name 'insulting and debasing.'" The council "has no authority to force a name change for the team," which practices in Virginia and plays in Maryland. But Mayor Vincent Gray and council members have "openly discussed trying to lure the team back to the District" (WASHINGTON POST, 11/6).
