Soccer Match Gives Busch Stadium Its Biggest Sports Crowd

Last night's exhibition match between EPL clubs Manchester City and Chelsea drew 48,263 fans to Busch Stadium, marking the "largest crowd ever for a sporting event" at the St. Louis ballpark. Attendance for the match, which Man City won 4-3, was "bigger than any baseball game the Cardinals have played, but smaller than the U2 concert" in '11. The Cardinals "squeezed seats everywhere, and sold them all." And with the turnout, "it almost certainly will mean more soccer games at Busch" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 5/24).

The Cardinals and Relevant Sports "will donate one dollar for every ticket sold" to the match to tornado relief efforts in Oklahoma, and both soccer clubs will match the donation. The players "wore commemorative black armbands as a tribute to those affected by the tornado" (MLB.com, 5/24).
