Sports Lawyers Association Set For 37th Annual Conference

The Sports Lawyers Association will hold its 37th annual conference beginning today in DC, and labor law and the state of sports labor as well as legal issues related to the NCAA are expected to dominate the three-day conference. The Exec Dirs of three of the major sports league unions – the NBPA’s Billy Hunter, the NHLPA’s Don Fehr and the NFLPA’s DeMaurice Smith – are scheduled to speak on Saturday, as are the top league lawyers for the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB.
Bob Batterman, the outside legal counsel to the NFL, and NFLPA outside counsel Jeffrey Kessler were scheduled to speak on Friday morning, but sources said both are expected to cancel due to the sensitive nature of the NFL lockout and the ongoing antitrust litigation in Tom Brady v. the NFL.
Meanwhile, the SLA has scheduled several panels dealing with the NCAA, including "Legal Impact of Agent Interference in Intercollegiate Athletics" and "Town Hall Debate: The Current State & Legality of the College BSC System."
