The NHL and NHLPA concluded meetings yesterday in Toronto without reaching an agreement and have not scheduled any meetings before the impending weekend deadline imposed by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. Several reports have a cancellation announcement coming sometime next week (THE DAILY).

Manchester United is "on the verge of granting Malcolm Glazer his wish to inspect the club's books" (Manchester GUARDIAN, 2/11).

A source with knowledge of Jason Giambi's contract told the N.Y. LAUGH TRACK

THE MONOLOGUES

CBS’ David Letterman: “It’s the second day of Lent, so tonight you’ll be giving up entertainment. ... American Airlines is cutting back, so they’re getting rid of pillows to save money. You want to save some money? How about getting rid of all of those bitchy male flight attendants? ... Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Hallmark has a wonderful idea. They have a Valentine’s Day card now for guys who forget Valentine’s Day, and it’s a great idea. The card is small, it’s gold and it maxes out at $10,000. ... It looks like Prince Charles will be marrying Camilla Parker Bowles, and the royal wedding takes place April 8th. Also, Prince Harry will be there in full dress Nazi uniform. ... Jose Canseco has written a controversial book about steroids, and in it Canseco admits that he used steroids, and in the ‘80s he also injected steroids into these people: Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Janet Reno” (“Late Show,” CBS, 2/10).

NBC’s Jay Leno: “Today was the Islamic New Year over there in the Middle East, and you know what’s fascinating, you know who hosted their New Year’s Eve party? Regis. The guy is everywhere. ... Prince Charles is going to marry his longtime girlfriend, Camilla Parker Bowles. He’s making her his wife because he’s tired of people mistaking her for his mother. Actually, I understand it was Camilla who first brought up the subject of marriage, and when she did, Charles was all ears. ... In Tennessee, a 27-year-old female gym teacher was charged with having sex with a 13-year-old male student. Of course the whole Tennessee community is shocked. It turns out, they’re not even related. ... A couple who hooked up over the Internet got the shock of their life when they finally met and found out they were husband and wife. They were cheating on each other over the Internet and it turns out they were husband and wife. Doesn’t that sound like Bill Clinton’s worst nightmare?” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 2/10).
