In ’99 the Panthers “bought out two-thirds of Ciccarelli's $1.5[M] contract,” while he was on the injured reserve list. According to the CBA, teams were “not permitted to buy out injured players. Ciccarelli is seeking the rest of his contract – $500,000 plus interest – from the Panthers” (Ft. Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL, 10/27).

KNIGHT COMMISSION TO DISCUSS ARMS RACE IN COLLEGE SPORTS

The INDIANAPOLIS STAR reports that the NCAA “this week is expected to propose team academic standards that could lead to scholarship losses, and the Knight Commission is in Indianapolis today to discuss financial issues in college sports.” The commission will “hear from panelists on the ‘arms race’ in college sports for ever-more expensive facilities and salaries. It will also hear from people working on uniform financial reporting by athletic departments to assess the true cost of college sports” (INDIANAPOLIS STAR,10/27).
