WEST SIDE STADIUM OPPONENTS HAVE SPENT $8.2M ON CAMPAIGN

The N.Y. DAILY NEWS reports that the Jets today will beginairing a new pro-West Side stadium ad featuring U.S. Olympians endorsing thecity’s bid for the 2012 Games. Meanwhile, a study released yesterday by not-for-profit governmentwatchdog Common/Cause NY shows that the Jets and other stadium backers havespent about $3.1M “trying to build support from City Hall and Albany.” The study also reveals that MSG and Cablevision have spent about $8.2M togetherin an effort to block the stadium (N.Y. DAILYNEWS, 10/26).


NEWS CORP. SHAREHOLDERS APPROVE RELOCATION TO THE U.S.

The HOLLYWOOD REPORTER notes that News Corp. shareholderstoday “voted overwhelmingly … in favor of relocating the company’s headquartersto Delaware” from Australia. The move will “facilitate expansion bygaining more access to capital investment and allow the stock to be added” tothe S&P 500. Meanwhile, the companyannounced FY ’04 revenues of $21B, a 20% increase over ’03, and operatingincome of $3.1B, a 21% increase. Operating income for Fox’ TV group jumped 7%, making it News Corp.’smost profitable business (HOLLYWOODREPORTER, 10/26).


GRAND PRIX WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP GROUP PUSHING FORWARD

The Grand Prix World Championship, which consists of F1 carmanufacturers BMW, Mercedes, Renault and Ferrari, today announced that it hasappointed Int’l Sports & Entertainment AG to begin building the operationaland commercial structure for a new open-wheel racing series to rival F1, tobegin no later than ’08. The group alsounveiled its mission statement, including four core objectives: ensuring along-term stable platform for the sport; improving the economic benefits forall participating teams; reaching the broadest global audience; and operatingtransparently (THE DAILY).


FORMER AGENT’S SUIT AGAINST VINCE CARTER BEGINNNING TODAY

The TORONTO SUN reports thatlegal proceedings in former agent WilliamBlack’s suit against Raptors F VinceCarter begin today in Columbia, South Carolina. Black, who is serving a prison term, isseeking US$9M for breach of contract and US$5M for punitive damages. Carter has countersued. The two “parted company after Black ran intoa series of legal problems.” Carter isnow repped by IMG (TORONTOSUN, 10/26).


STATEN ISLAND SPEEDWAYBACKERS COMMISSION NEW STUDY

The N.Y. TIMES reports that NASCAR promoters have “commissioneda study to determine whether buses or ferries could alleviate some of thetraffic congestion that would result from a proposed Staten Island speedway, which could draw more than 80,000 fans to theborough on race days.” ISC, which isbacking the project, expects to “release the findings of the traffic study byearly next month” (N.Y.TIMES, 10/26).


ESPN NEGOTIATING CONTRACT FOR NFL DRAFT GURU MEL KIPER JR.

ESPN Exec VP/Programming & Production Mark Shapiro today will hold the finalcontract negotiating session with NFL Draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. Kiper’s wifeand business rep, Kim Kiper, recentlysaid that they “had agreed with [ESPN’s] conditions, describing the differencesas their wishes for ‘a more specific contract’ as opposed to the network’s hopefor ‘a more broad-range contract’” (BaltimoreSUN, 10/16).


MORNING BRIEFS

MLBAM has teamed with Monster to begin recruiting candidatesto staff MLB.com during the ’05 season. Under the deal, Monster has homepage placement on MLB.com, as well asthe homepages of all 30 teams (Monster).

An “angry and frustrated crowd” of more than 150 inSouthwest Washington last night “denounced Mayor Anthony A. Williams’ proposal to build a baseball stadium in theircommunity, saying they feared being displaced and worried that public moneywill be diverted from schools and healthcare” (WASHINGTONPOST, 10/26).

MLB VP/On-Field Operations Bob Watson “has been offered what could be a temporary job asGeneral Manager of the Expos.” Watson is“still considering the offer,” and a source said that he “expects Watson toaccept the job” (WASHINGTONPOST, 10/26).

F1 has formally announced a five-year deal to return to Mexico beginning in ’06 as a US$70M track willbe constructed in Cancun (AP, 10/26).

According to the latest NCAA graduation rate report, 62% ofall NCAA student-athletes who entered Division I-A schools in ‘97 graduated inthe six-year window established by the U.S. Department of Education asstandard. The six-year graduation ratefor the overall student body grew one percentage point, to 60%, over the past year(NCAA).

The ECHL Alaska Aces have signed Devils C and Anchorage native Scott Gomez, who had been contemplatingoverseas options (ECHL).

The Upper Midwest Chapter of the National Academy ofTelevision Arts & Sciences awarded FSN North two local Emmy Awards Saturdayfor its coverage of Univ. of Minnesota men’s hockey(Fox).

The Montreal GAZETTE reported that Molson is testing TheWizmark, a talking urinal that consists of “a hockey puck-sized plastic discoutfitted with flashing lights and a microprocessor-powered larynx,” in Montreal nightclubs. Themotion-activated Molson logo sounds a siren and says in French, “The cold shotof Molson Dry at 6.5-percent alcohol – it’s legal” (Montreal GAZETTE, 10/25).
