LAUGH TRACK

THE MONOLOGUES:

CBS’ David Letterman: “I love the Emmy Awards. Thank God, it’s about time TV stars get a little recognition. The security, if you were at the Emmys, was very tight. It was tighter than Star Jones’ dress. … The show was so long and boring, I thought I was hosting. … The Emmy for Best Supporting Actress went to Mrs. Jim McGreevey. … Best Technical Achievement award went to Donald Trump’s hair. … The talent competition was unbelievable at the Miss America Pageant. Year after year it gets better and better and better. Miss New York had a wonderful talent for the Miss America contest. She showed you how to rig a TV to get free HBO” (“Late Show,” CBS, 9/20).

NBC’s Jay Leno: “The Emmy Awards were last night. HBO got 32 Emmys. NBC took home eight. CBS News gave back four. … Anybody watch TV Saturday night? I was watching the opening of the new Hooters in Atlantic City. Oh, that was the Miss America pageant. … Did you see the swimsuits at the Miss America pageant? Is it me or is this gig just a brass pole and a two drink minimum away from being a strip club? … Congratulations to Miss California for winning the talent competition. Her talent: staying a virgin in California for 22 years. … Last night opposite the Emmys, NBC showed ‘Titantic.’ When I saw a ship going down, I just thought it was the Kerry campaign” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 9/20).

LATE NIGHT LAUGHS:

Last night’s Top Ten” list was “Top Ten Bush Tax Proposals.” The list was read by John Kerry sitting next to Letterman (“Late Show,” CBS, 8/20).

10) “No estate tax for families with at least two U.S. Presidents.”

9) “W-2 form is now Dubya-2 form.”

8) “Under the simplified tax code, your refund check goes directly to Halliburton.”

7) “The reduced earned income tax credit is so unfair, it just makes me want to tear out my lustrous, finely groomed hair.”

6) “Attorney General Ashcroft gets to write off the entire United States Constitution.”

5) “Texas Rangers can take a business loss for trading Sammy Sosa.”

4) “Eliminate all income taxes; just ask Teresa to cover the whole damn thing.”

3) “Cheney can claim Bush as a dependent.”

2) “$100 penalty if you pronounce it ‘nuclear’ instead of ‘nucular.’”

1) “George W. Bush gets a deduction for mortgaging our entire future.”
