NEWS FROM THE ATHENS SUMMER GAMES: EMPTY SEATS EVERYWHERE

The L.A. TIMES notes that of the 53 events held Sunday, only 14 “drew crowds that filled two-thirds or more of the stands.” Behind the scenes, “television executives from around the globe have been pleading with organizers to do something to fix the problem” (<ahref="http: target="_blank">L.A. TIMES, 8/17</ahref="http:>).

ATHOC will open 35 new ticket booths today (“Nightly News,” NBC, 8/16).

USA TODAY notes that the Int’l Court of Arbitration for Sport today will rule on the two-year ban given to U.S. sprinter Torri Edwards (USA TODAY, 8/17).


COWBOYS-ARLINGTON AGREEMENT CAPS CITY’S SPENDING AT $325M

The DALLAS MORNING NEWS reports that the Arlington City Council tonight will vote on whether to “formally approve the city’s agreement with the Cowboys” for a $650M stadium near Ameriquest Field and then “vote to put a referendum on the November 2 ballot asking voters to increase sales and other taxes to pay for half” of the stadium. The pact includes guarantees that Arlington’s share of the stadium would be capped at $325M (<ahref="http: target="_blank">DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 8/17</ahref="http:>).


NHL, NHLPA RESUMING CBA NEGOTIATIONS TODAY IN NEWARK

The NHL and NHLPA today will resume negotiations for a new CBA in Newark, and NHL Exec VP & CLO Bill Daly said, “We expect to come out of [today’s] meeting with a comprehensive schedule of frequent negotiating sessions and are committed to making every effort over the next 30 days to reach an agreement.” NHLPA Senior Dir of Business Affairs Ted Saskin: “The main stumbling block remains the league’s demand for a salary cap and refusal to consider any alternatives” (<ahref="http: target="_blank">TORONTO SUN, 8/17</ahref="http:>).

BOXING SUIT ENTERS THE RING AS DUO SEEKS TO BLOCK A CONTENDER

DAILY VARIETY reports that DreamWorks’ Jeffrey Katzenburg and reality TV producer Mark Burnett “are expected to go to court today in Los Angeles seeking to stop” Fox’ “The Next Great Champ” from premiering September 10. The pair, who are co-producing NBC’s “The Contender,” accuse Fox of “blatantly stealing the idea from them.” Fox says that the claims “are without merit.” NBC is not part of the court action. “The Contender” debuts in November (<ahref="http: vr1117909166?categoryid="14&cs=1'" target="_blank">DAILY VARIETY, 8/17</ahref="http:>).


NCAA REACHES DECISION ON ELIGIBILITY OF JEREMY BLOOM

The ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS reports that the Univ. of Colorado today will make an announcement regarding the eligibility of Jeremy Bloom after the NCAA informed the school last night of its decision. Indications are that Bloom “would be reinstated, but sources close to Bloom and the university would offer no confirmation” (<ahref="http: target="_blank">ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 8/17</ahref="http:>).


MORNING BRIEFS

According to a directive sent to NFL teams yesterday, clubs “may no longer list a player as having a ‘leg injury,’ but must specify” what part of the leg is injured. NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue “stressed that teams must be factual and accurate with their information” (<ahref="http: story?id="1860534'" target="_blank">ESPN.com 8/16</ahref="http:>).

The NFLPA yesterday filed a special master case against the Cowboys, alleging that Quincy Carter was wrongfully terminated (<ahref="http: target="_blank">FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 8/17</ahref="http:>).

ESPN NFL preseason broadcaster Pat Summerall on broadcasting a full season’s schedule, “If somebody comes along and says, ‘Hey, we’d like you to work,’ I’d love to do that” (ESPNews, 8/16).

The Colorado Supreme Court yesterday refused to “consider an appeal by prosecutors in the Kobe Bryant rape case of a ruling that would allow jurors to hear testimony about the sexual history of the basketball star's accuser” (<ahref="http: target="_blank">USA TODAY, 8/17</ahref="http:>).

The NAIA yesterday signed a two-year extension with the College of the Ozarks to host the Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship through ’07 (NAIA).

Magna Global USA yesterday released a study reporting that the “recent resurgence of TV viewers among men 18-34 is being driven more by cable than broadcast.” From June 28-August 8, cable experienced a 14% aggregate increase over the year ago period among men 18-34. The six broadcast nets experienced a 4% decrease (<ahref="http: article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id="1000613317'" target="_blank">HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, 8/17</ahref="http:>).
