BLACK COACHES ASSOCIATION TO UNVEIL MINORITY HIRING CRITERIA

The Black Coaches Association today at 10:00am CT inIndianapolis will address minority football hiring issues in intercollegiateathletics and announce the criteria it plans to use to grade Div. I programs ontheir efforts to interview and hire candidates. NCAA President Myles Brand is scheduled to speak (BlackCoaches Association).

USA TODAY reports that the criteria is “communication withBCA officials or those representing the BCA in regard to candidates of color;number of individuals of color involved in the process; number of candidates ofcolor officially interviewed; time frame of the search from announcement tohire; and how closely the school’s affirmative-action policy is followed” (USATODAY, 10/21).


YANKEES’ NELSON, GARCIA TO BE SUMMONED FOR BULLPEN FRACAS

The BOSTON GLOBE reports that Boston detectives “will seek acomplaint this morning in Roxbury District Court charging” Yankees P JeffNelson and RF Karim Garcia, who allegedly assaulted groundskeeper PaulWilliams in the Yankees’ bullpen at Fenway Park during Game Three of theALCS. The players “will be summoned fora hearing next month, at which time a clerk magistrate will hear evidence anddecide whether to issue charges.” Thepolice are seeking misdemeanor assault anf battery charges (BOSTONGLOBE, 10/21).


UNIV. OF MN TO RESUME TALKS TODAY WITH POTENTIAL DONOR

The Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE reports that lawyers for T.Denny Sanford, who has made an offer of $35M to kick off a Univ. ofMinnesota football stadium fundraising effort, “will meet today with universitygeneral counsel Mark Rotenberg to resume negotiations on his potentialdonation.” Meanwhile, universitystaffers and consultants have been “developing a series of feasibility studiesto determine the size, location, cost and fundraising capabilities of theexpected 50,000-seat stadium.” University CFO Richard Pfutzenreuter expects “the total projectto exceed $200[M]” (Minneapolis STARTRIBUNE, 10/21).


REINCARNATED SOFTBALL LEAGUE TO BE ANNOUNCED TODAY

The AKRON BEACON JOURNAL reports that officials today will“announce the formation of a new, eight-team league called the National ProFastpitch League.” Teams in Akron, NY-NJ, Boston,Houston, San Antonio, Sacramento, Denver and Tucson will play a 60-game seasonfrom June 1 to August 29. The newleague is “the reincarnation of the failed predecessor, the Women’s ProSoftball League, which folded in 2001 because of sagging attendance and adeclining number of teams” (AKRON BEACON JOURNAL,10/21).


MORNING BRIEFS

The DENVER POST reports that Kobe Bryant yesterdaywas ordered to stand trial on sexual assault charges, though Eagle County JudgeFrederick Gannett said that the “case has weaknesses.” Gannett added that the evidence “could beinterpreted more than one way – the same argument [Bryant’s] attorneys madeduring the preliminary hearing” (DENVERPOST, 10/21). All three majornetwork morning shows teased the decision in their introductions (THE DAILY).

The MIAMI HERALD reports that the Univ. of Miami yesterdayfiled suit in Miami-Dade County Circuit Court “against the Big East Conference, the University ofConnecticut, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and West Virginia, alleging breach of contractand a conspiracy to defraud on the part of the conference and individualschools. Miami also sued UConn fordefamation” (MIAMIHERALD, 10/21).

The N.Y. POST reports that N.Y. Mayor Michael Bloombergyesterday signed into law the “Calvin Klein” bill to “crack down onunruly fan behavior at sporting events.” The law makes trespassing on the playing area a misdemeanor, which caninclude jail time and fines. Lastseason, Klein “caused a ruckus when he left his courtside seat mid-game andstrolled over” to former Knicks G Latrell Sprewell (N.Y. POST, 10/21).

USA TODAY reports that the IAAF “may decide this week toretest about 400 urine specimens from August’s World Track & FieldChampionships for a recently discovered designer steroid” (USA TODAY,10/21).

Dolphins trainer Kevin O’Neill said that the “recentrash of staph infections that not only affected his team but much of thefootball world could stem from NFL Europe” (PALMBEACH POST, 10/21).

N.Y. POST gossip column “Page Six” reports that DennisRodman’s motorcycle crash Sunday night in Las Vegas “was captured on tape by ESPN, which is doinga reality show on Rodman” (N.Y. POST, 10/21).

The BOSTON GLOBE notes that John Dennis and GerryCallahan this morning returned to host the “Dennis & Callahan” morningdrive show on WEEI-AM, “having served two-week suspensions for theirwell-documented wisecrack about an escaped gorilla and a Metco bus stop” (BOSTONGLOBE, 10/21).

The TORONTO SUN reports that the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Seriesis “coming to Canada in 2004, with a full season of races” at Ontario’sDelaware Speedway and Quebec’s St. Eustache Speedway, marking the “first timethat NASCAR will have weekly events in Canada for an entire season” (TORONTOSUN, 10/21).

The Stockton (CA) City Council today will consider a plan“for a new 20-acre center that would include a 10,000-seat arena, a 5,000-seatbaseball stadium, a 150-room hotel, shops and apartments.” While the baseball stadium would be used bythe Single A California League Stockton Ports, the city “does not currentlyhave pro sports teams to play in the larger arena” (L.A.TIMES, 10/20).

BROADCASTING & CABLE reports that for the first threeweeks of the fall season, “the level of men 18-34 using television is down 8%in prime time. Viewing levels in thedemo are down in other dayparts as well and acrossthe broadcast networks. That’s with one exception: baseball-heavy Fox, which isup 3% in the demo in prime time but doesn’t come close to accounting for thesharp overall decline” (BROADCASTING & CABLE, 10/20 issue).

The L.A. TIMES reports that a trial to determine whetherclothing retailer Wet Seal is “responsible for a portion of back wages owed togarment workers who made its clothes under contract was postponed” untilNovember 17 (L.A.TIMES, 10/21).

The N.Y. TIMES reports that Microsoft today will introduce a$150M ad campaign to promote the latest version of Microsoft Office (N.Y. TIMES,10/21).
