X GAMES IX OPENS TODAY IN L.A., TV COVERAGE BEGINSTHURSDAY

ESPN’s X Games IX begin today in L.A., and the ST.PETERSBURG TIMES reports that the games “can be seen at expn.com,” as the site “will offer ‘XGIX Raw,’a direct video feed of events as they happen, ‘in all its raw, unedited glory …unabridged and uncensored’” (ST.PETERSBURG TIMES, 8/8). ABC,ESPN and ESPN2 will air 20 hours of coverage August 14-18. The events are scheduled to take place atStaples Center, the L.A. Coliseum and Long Beach Marine Stadium.


VOICES OF MODERATION BEING HEARD IN BCS VS. NON-BCS DEBATE

The NCAA Exec Committee will meet today in Indianapolisfollowing a meeting yesterday of its Div. I BOD, and the INDIANAPOLIS STARreports that “voices of moderation are starting to be heard” in the debate overthe future of the BCS and postseason college football. Two BCS opponents, Southern MethodistPresident Gerald Turner and Kent State President Carol Cartwright,said that they do not “think a playoff is the only alternative.” Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenwaysaid yesterday’s meeting “focused on the process for negotiations between theBCS and non-BCS schools, not options for a new system” (INDIANAPOLISSTAR, 8/8).


TITANS TO DEBUT 30-MINUTE MAGAZINE-STYLE SHOW TONIGHT

The Nashville TENNESSEAN reports that the Titans tonightwill debut a 30-minute magazine-style show, “Titans All Access,” at 9:30pm CTon WNAB-WB. Titans radio announcer MikeKeith “is the primary host of the show, which will air each week until theTitans’ season ends.” The show willre-air Saturday mornings on WUXP-UPN, and Saturday nights on WZTV-Fox. The show “will be much more than gamehighlights” (NashvilleTENNESSEAN, 8/8).

TNT yesterday announced the addition of Steve Kerr asan NBA analyst. Kerr will work on-siteon TNT’s Thursday night games, All-Star Weekend and during the net’s playoffcoverage (TNT).

USA TODAY reports that at least “one sponsor is firmlybehind Kobe Bryant,” as ESPN’s Jim Gray said, “Kobe flew to hiscourt appearance in Colorado and back to Los Angeles in the Upper Deck plane” (USATODAY, 8/8).

USA TODAY reports that a CNN reporter recently called theLakers requesting an interview with late announcer Chick Hearn regardingBryant. The team “politely explainedwhy Hearn was unavailable” (USATODAY, 8/8).

ANANOVA cites several London newspapers in reporting thatthe Premier League today will announce a new TV deal, under which BSkyB “willretain their monopoly of live TV rights under a three-year contract wortharound [US$1.78B]” (ANANOVA.com,8/8).

The L.A. TIMES reports that LPGA Commissioner Ty Votawyesterday held a mandatory meeting “with 13 South Korean players” in the fieldof this weekend’s Wendy’s Championship for Children at Tartan Fields in Dublin,OH, and LPGA Tour VP Barbara Trammel said that the “focus of thediscussion was a primer on standards and regulations, not about allegedinstances of cheating” (L.A. TIMES,8/8).

As expected, the San Diego City Council yesterday voted 8-1to extend the good-faith negotiating period with the Chargers until May 1, 2004(L.A.TIMES, 8/8).

The HOUSTON CHRONICLE reports that Helmut and FranzVonlichten of Es Posthumus, whose music was used in trailers for“Spiderman” and “Minority Report,” will compose new NFL theme music for CBS (HOUSTONCHRONICLE, 8/8). Meanwhile, USATODAY reports that the music “sounds like gladiators are about to attack” (USATODAY, 8/8).

The Baltimore SUN reports that the athletic field atNavy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium will be named in honor of former Navyofficer and former Augusta National Golf Club Chair Jack Stephens, as herecently donated $10M towards the stadium’s $40M renovation campaign (BaltimoreSUN, 8/8).

The CHRONICLE OF HIGHER EDUCATION reports a proposed policyendorsed by the NCAA Div. III Presidents Council would ban Div. III schoolsthat offer one or two Div. I sports from “awarding athletics scholarships forthose teams.” To take effect, thepolicy must be approved by a majority of the division’s members at the NCAA’sannual convention in January (CHRONICLE OF HIGHER EDUCATION, 8/8).

The N.Y. DAILY NEWS reports that following last night’s preseason game against the Patriots, GiantsTE Jeremy Shockey denied callingCowboys coach Bill Parcells a “homo” in the upcoming issue of New Yorkmagazine, which hits newsstands Monday. Shockey: “I’m 100% sure I didn’tsay that” (N.Y. DAILYNEWS, 8/8).

  • The N.Y. TIMES reports that Single-A South Atlantic League South Georgia Waves Ticket Manager Chris Rounds had “pledged to sleep at [the club’s ballpark] until the Waves … draw 1,500 fans for a game.” However, following Monday’s 75th Ranger Regiment Night, which drew a crowd of 2,552, Rounds “is still living in his skybox apartment at the park.” Rounds: “I moved here and then a week later I started living at the park. I’m actually still living at the park” (N.Y. TIMES, 8/8).

A Broadcast Cable Financial Management Association studyshows that combined ad revenues in Q2 ’03 for ABC, CBS and NBC increased 0.75%,or $20M, from the same period a year earlier. Total net revenues for the first half of ’03 were down 5.6%, or $318M,as compared to ’02. The shortfall maybe attributed in part due to the contribution of the Winter Olympics to lastyear’s results (BCFM).
