MIAMI GUARANTEED AT LEAST $45M TO REMAIN IN BIG EAST

The BOSTON GLOBE reports that ACC Commissioner JohnSwofford, Associate Commissioner Fred Barakat and Wake Forest Univ.AD Ron Wellman are “expected to lead the contingent of nine” that willvisit the Univ. of Miami today and tomorrow. The group next week will visit Boston College and Syracuse, and officialinvitations to join the ACC “could come as early as the end of next week” (BOSTONGLOBE, 5/29).

The PALM BEACH POST reports that Miami “has been guaranteed$9[M] annually for the next five years if it remains in the Big East” (PALMBEACH POST, 5/29).

The Ft. Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL reports that nine U.S.senators from five Big East states – CT, NJ, WV, VA and PA – yesterday unitedto “condemn the proposed move” of the three schools to the ACC.  The group sent a letter stating as much tothe president of the three schools considering secession (Ft.Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL, 5/29).


CBS EXPECTS AGREEMENT TODAY WITH AFFILIATES ON OLYMPICS

CBS today concludes its 49th annual affiliatemeeting in Las Vegas, and BLOOMBERG NEWS reported that the net will ask itsaffiliates “to pay part of the cost of a planned bid for the broadcast TVrights to the 2010-12 Olympic Games.” CBS President of Affiliate Relations Peter Schruth: “We wouldexpect that we could come to a mutually agreeable arrangement where they wouldsupport our bid.”  While Schruth saidthat it “was too early to know how the affiliates might help,” he expects toreach an agreement today (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 5/28).


RECORD COULD FALL AS MSU WILL FACE KENTUCKY AT FORD FIELD

The DETROIT FREE PRESS reports that MI State Univ. (MSU)Sports Information Dir John Lewandowski today will host an 11:00am ETnews conference to announce that the MSU men’s basketball team will play theUniv. of KY on Saturday, December 13, at 4:00pm ET at Ford Field, in “a gamethat should break attendance records.” Ford Field has a capacity of 65,000 for football, “but more seats couldbe added for basketball.”  The currentrecord for an NCAA basketball game is 68,112 at the Superdome.  CBS will televise the game (DETROIT FREEPRESS, 5/29).


STEINBRENNER PROMISES CHANGE WILL COME FROM MEETINGS

The N.Y. TIMES reports that the Yankees’ organizationalmeetings conclude today following a meeting yesterday between Owner GeorgeSteinbrenner, Senior VP & GM Brian Cashman, VP & AssistantGM Jean Afterman, Senior VP/Baseball Operations Gordon Blakeleyand VP/Major League Scouting Damon Oppenheimer.  Steinbrenner has “promised that change willcome from these meetings” (N.Y.TIMES, 5/29).  Yankees VP &Special Advisor to the General Partners Gene Michael was not invited ashe is currently “negotiating for a multiyear contract extension” (N.Y.TIMES, 5/29).

GOLF WORLD BUSINESSreports that Tiger Woods is “expected to debut a Nike Golfprototype driver” at the PGA Tour’s Memorial Tournament, which begins today inDublin, OH.  The prototype “has a slightly larger clubhead thanWoods’ previous Nike driver and boasts a ‘considerably hotter’ clubface” (GOLFWORLD BUSINESS, 5/29).

NHL VP & Hockey Operations Dir Colin Campbell, onthe possibility of the NHL expanding the size of nets to increase scoring:“We’ve got to try it” (TORONTOSTAR, 5/29).

Mighty Ducks G Jean-Sebastien Giguere, on the sameissue: “I think that’s silly.  Youchange the whole game around if you do that. It’s like basketball making the hoops bigger.  You don’t want to see games with 8-7 scores.  That’s not a fun game to play in.  I think it’s ridiculous” (L.A.TIMES, 5/29).

NEWSDAY reports thatthe Jets filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the NJSEA accusing the authority“of overcharging the team by $7.63[M] for renting Giants Stadium.”  The Jets claim that the NJSEA “violatedthe terms of the team’s lease by charging” them more for rent than the Giants (NEWSDAY,5/29).

While the ’03 Women’s World Cup was moved from China to theU.S. because of SARS, China will retain the automatic bid granted to the hostcountry (THE DAILY).

The L.A. DAILY NEWS reports that the ninth X Games, whichwill be held August 14-18 in L.A., “will include surfing for the first time” (L.A.DAILY NEWS, 5/29).

The USHL yesterday approved the move of the Topeka ScareCrowsto St. Louis, effective immediately. The team will be called the St. Louis Heartland Eagles and will beginplay in the U.S. Ice Sports Complex in the ’03-04 season (THE DAILY).

  • The SEATTLE TIMES reports that a crowd of 3,250 attended last night’s MLS Earthquakes-A League Seattle Sounders exhibition match at Seahawks Stadium (SEATTLE TIMES, 5/29).
  • The TORONTO STAR reports that an “energetic crowd” of 36,806 attended last night’s White Sox-Blue Jays game at SkyDome, thanks in part to a $2 upper deck ticket promotion sponsored by Toronto-based courier company Expedite Plus to alleviate local concerns over SARS (TORONTO STAR, 5/29).

A LIGHTER BUZZ

Apparently Steinbrenner has asense of humor about his team’s bloated payroll.  When asked last night if he wanted to acquire another hitter, TheBoss “turned playful and reached into his pockets.”  His response: “I’m not sure.  Let me see if I have any money left.  Do you have any money? Anybody want to contribute?” (N.Y.TIMES, 5/29).

The Sports Lawyers Association today begins its 29thannual conference, which runs through Satruday, at the JW Marriott Desert RidgeResort & Spa in Phoenix.  Paneldiscussions today include “An Overview of Recent Legal Developments in Sports,”“Protection of Athlete Publicity Rights: Player, League and OrganizationPerspectives,” “Legal Considerations in Cross Jurisdictional Taxation ofLawyers, Athletes and Attorneys” and “Sports Lawyers Ethics in an Enron Age” (THEDAILY).

The Seventh Annual Hispanic Marketing Midwest Conferencewill take place at the offices of the St. Paul Area Chamber of Commerce.  The all-day conference will include apresentation by former Padres VP/Hispanic Marketing Enrique Morones,entitled “Multiplying Your Hispanic Fan Base in Sports Marketing.”  Sponsors include Xcel Energy and the Twins (THEDAILY).

The NTRA will hold a 1:00pm ET teleconference to preview the135th Belmont Stakes.  NTRACommissioner Tim Smith, Funny Cide co-Owner Jackson Knowlton,trainer Barclay Tagg, jockey Jose Santos and Empire Maker jockey JerryBailey will participate (THE DAILY).

The Cavaliers will hold a Select-A-Seat day at Gund Arenabeginning at 9:00am ET.  In addition,the team has extended season-ticket ordering hours from 8:00am-8:00pm weekdaysand 9:00am-4:00pm on weekends to handle the demand following the team winningthe draft lottery and the rights to LeBron James (THE DAILY).

NBA Kings President Geoff Petrie will meet withmembers of the Maloof ownership family in Las Vegas today to discuss theteam.  Expected to attend are Joeand Gavin Maloof, as well as minority Owner Bob Hernreich.  The Maloofs “just want to know how [theteam] is being managed, from top to bottom” (SACRAMENTO BEE, 5/27).

ESPN will broadcast live coverage of the Scripps HowardNational Spelling Bee Finals from 10:00am-noon and 1:00-4:00pm ET.  “SportsCenter” anchor Chris McKendrywill host.  Additionally, the networkwill broadcast coverage of the MATHCOUNTS National Competition, held May 9 inChicago, from noon-1:00pm, with ESPN reporter Stacy Paetz hosting (THEDAILY).

Warriors C Adonal Foyle will ring the closing bell atthe Pacific Stock Exchange at 1:00pm PT. The ringing will also mark the end of the Adonal Foyle InvestmentChallenge, a financial literacy program in partnership with Merrill Lynch andthe Securities Industry Foundation for Economic Education designed to teachstudents about the stock market (THE DAILY).

The N.Y. TIMESreports that opponents of media deregulation are “running advertisementsdepicting the media mogul Rupert Murdoch as the scowling face ofindustry consolidation, including commercials being shown today on hiscompany’s Fox News Channel.”  The FCC ata meeting next Monday is “expected to relax ownership restrictions, includinglimits on local (TV) stations and newspapers” (N.Y. TIMES,5/29).

The WASHINGTON POST reports that N.Y. Times reporter RickBragg has resigned. Following the Jayson Blair controversy, theTimes’ newsroom “has erupted in anger over [Bragg’s] aggressive defense ofrelying heavily on stringers and interns, with many reporters denouncing thepractice and insisting that’s not the way they do business.”  Bragg had planned to leave the paper thissummer “after being hit with a two-week suspension” (WASHINGTONPOST, 5/29).

The N.Y. POSTreports that Men’s Fitness magazine will soon relocate from L.A. toN.Y.  Yesterday, American Media CEO David Pecker “sacked Editor JerryKindela and replaced him with Peter Sikowitz, who had run themagazine for five years in the 1990s” (N.Y. POST, 5/29).
