THE GAME ENDURES: CARDINALS RESUME PLAY FOLLOWING DEATH

After Saturday's Cardinals-Cubs game was canceled following the sudden death of Cardinals P Darryl Kile, the two teams did play last night, and the game was ESPN's "Sunday Night Baseball" game of the week. While there was discussion among the Cardinals players and organization on whether to play last night, ESPN's Jon Miller opened the broadcast by saying, "They decided to play the game, and so we are here to cover it on 'Sunday Night Baseball.' And we will do the best we can with it." Miller: "Ordinarily, a baseball game is an escape, a three-hour vacation. ... But more somber conditions here tonight, which puts us at a little bit of a disadvantage." ESPN also had interviews with Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa and GM Walt Jocketty during the game ("Sunday Night Baseball," ESPN, 6/23).

The CHICAGO SUN-TIMES reports that there "was no pregame or in-game music" last night, save for the National Anthem and an organ-only rendition of ''Take Me Out to the Ball Game'' in the seventh inning. Flags "flew at half-staff around the park, and Kile's No. 57 displayed continuously on the message board." No public-address announcements "were made, except for player at-bats and lineup changes." Cubs VP/Marketing John McDonough: ''What we're trying to do is something dignified and understated, especially on a somber night. We're going with a 'less is more' philosophy'' (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 6/24).

LAUGH TRACK

THE MONOLOGUES:

CBS' David Letterman: "(Last Friday) was the summer solstice. It's the longest day of the year. I thought Mother's Day was the longest day of the year. ... The longest night of the year was the night I hosted the Academy Awards. ... (Last Thursday) was 'Bring Your Dog To Work Day.' … As a matter of fact, Mets (C) Mike Piazza sat in the dugout all day with his poodle. ... Puff Daddy is serving jury duty ... and they had some trouble in the courtroom earlier (last Friday) when Puffy found the defendant 'not jiggy.' ... Everyone in (N.Y.) has World Cup fever and as a matter of fact, if you go down to Times Square, the hookers have World Cup fever. And for an extra $50, they'll pretend to be interested" ("The Late Show," CBS, 6/21).

NBC's Jay Leno: "To offset some of the criticism they've gotten, Southwest Airlines introduced another new promotion, 'Fat kids fly free.' ... Actually, only two of them are terrorists. The other 38 want to direct (a film). They have a screenplay. ... They're now saying that President Bush was completely unaware that the White House was evacuated when that plane flew over restricted air space. Bush unaware?! Who's going to believe that?! ... (Last Friday was) the official first day of summer and in Washington, Attorney General John Ashcroft let naked statues wear tank tops and shorts. In fact, now that it's officially summer, Martha Stewart celebrated by doing some outsider trading. ... Germany defeated the U.S. soccer team 1-0 (last Friday). It was close. You know, a couple of days ago, President Bush called the U.S. soccer team to congratulate them on beating Mexico, and (Friday) after they lost by just one point, Al Gore called to congratulate them. ... It seems engineers in England have developed a cell phone that can be implanted in your tooth. And (last Friday), people in (WV) said, 'Forget the cell phone. Just send us the teeth.' ... It was on this date (last Friday) in 1971, the very first Starbucks coffee shop opened in Seattle, (WA). Back then, you could actually get a large cup of coffee for only $6. ... The Eli Lilly company announced (last) week they've come out with a new Viagra pill they say will last 36 hours. What do you when you have to go to work the next day? Carry your briefcase (in front of you)?" ("Tonight Show," NBC, 6/21).
