MAGIC SEE NO SUPPORT FOR NEW ARENA AND DELAY EFFORT

The ORLANDO SENTINEL reports the Magic "have shelved plans for a new arena" and will renovate TD Waterhouse Centre instead. However, the Magic claim "even a multimillion-dollar face lift of the existing arena is nothing more than a Band-Aid." Orange County officials cited "a poor economy and other high-price commitments" as reasons that the county could not afford its share of a new arena (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 7/10).

SAINTS REACH TENTATIVE ACCORD WITH LA – FOR NOW

The Baton Rouge ADVOCATE reports the Saints and LA have reached "an agreement in principle that would make the Saints richer this season and next but delay a decision on a new stadium." CALL OLIVER STONE! WAS THE FIX IN FOR DALE EARNHARDT JR.?

Conspiracy theorists claim that NASCAR arranged to have Dale Earnhardt Jr. win the Pepsi 400 in the return to Daytona Speedway where his father died last February. But ESPN2's Scott Pruett said, "That's impossible. There's too many variables for NASCAR to fix a race. ... They can help sway things one way or another by giving certain advantages, that does happen. But to actually fix a race, that's impossible" ("RPM 2Night," ESPN2, 7/9). Meanwhile, Earnhardt Jr. was at the MLB All-Star festivities in Seattle and spoke on the speculation: "It does make me angry. A guy asked me just earlier today and that's the first I heard of it and I about knocked the hell out of him. I don't know what to say to people like that" ("Sports Tonight," CNN/SI, 7/9). An estimated crowd of 1,000 people were at the "Bud World" display in Seattle to get Earnhardt Jr.’s autograph (SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER, 7/10).

The additional funds "would keep the Detroit Grand Prix in the city." ICHIRO IS THE WORD IN SEATTLE DURING ALL-STAR WEEK

The SEATTLE TIMES reports that MLB’s All-Star Game FanFest has more Ichiro "merchandise for sale than for any other player. Maybe too much, because yesterday a framed poster that cost $8 on Friday was down to $5. But other business was booming as one collector sold the four Ichiro banners he brought for a total of more than $800." Meanwhile, "another Ichiro item going fast is the souvenir program, which pictures one of five players." Ichiro is pictured on 60% of the 125,000 souvenir programs that were made (SEATTLE TIMES, 7/10). The other players featured include Reds CF Ken Griffey Jr., Yankees SS Derek Jeter, Red Sox P Pedro Martinez and Mets C Mike Piazza (THE DAILY).

The audience levels peaked on Saturday evening between 6:00-6:15pm London time when Henman lost the fourth set to Goran Ivanisevic before rain stopped their match (London GUARDIAN, 7/9)….Wimbledon champ Ivanisevic fired back after John McEnroe called him a "one-hit wonder": "The way he’s commentating, giving everybody (crap): ‘This guy is bad. This guy is going to choke. This guy is not good.’ Nobody is good for him. … I don’t want to talk about him. Who cares about him?" (MIAMI HERALD, 7/10).

Isaacson will oversee CNN’s domestic network, including CNN Headline News, CNN International, CNNfn, CNN/SI and CNN en Espanol (HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, 7/10).
