NFL Avg. Attendance Drops To Lowest Point Since ’04

NFL teams averaged 66,648 fans at home during the ’19 regular season, the lowest figure since '04. It is the first time since '10 average attendance dropped below 67,000. The Cowboys led all teams at the gate for the 11th straight season, dating back to when AT&T Stadium opened in ’09, but their average of 90,929 was still a 0.8% decrease year-over-year (91,620). Just two teams in the league experienced increases of more than 5.0%: The Bills (6.0%), who are back in the playoffs after missing last season, and the Redskins (7.3%), who despite a 3-13 record had the largest jump of any team in ’19 even as FedExField was only filled to 79.9% capacity.

GLASS HALF EMPTY? In all, 15 teams saw at least some decline in home attendance this season, including, most significantly, the Bengals (-7.0%), Raiders (-7.6%) and Jaguars (-8.7%). Other than the Chargers, who played at the soccer-specific Dignity Health Sports Park, the Bengals had the league’s lowest average for the third straight season, while the Jaguars’ attendance at TIAA Bank Field was its lowest since moving one of its home games to London in ’13. The league hosted four games in London this season as opposed to three in ’18. The Raiders, who are set to move from Oakland to Las Vegas’ new Allegiant Stadium this offseason, averaged 53,539 fans in their last season at RingCentral Coliseum. The Chargers, meanwhile, experienced a 3.1% dip despite having the smallest-capacity facility in the league, while the Rams experienced a 0.5% increase at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum. Both are set to move to the new SoFi Stadium next season.
