Speedway Motorsports Officials Confirm Plans For More Football At Bristol Motor Speedway

SMI President & CEO Marcus Smith and Bristol Motor Speedway Exec VP & GM Jerry Caldwell yesterday confirmed plans for "another football game to come to BMS," according to Jeff Birchfield of the JOHNSON CITY PRESS. No dates have been set, and talks are "ongoing with multiple college athletic programs." Smith said, "We’re working on it. Jerry Caldwell is working hard on it. I would say that another game will be coming at some point." Caldwell: "We will have another football game, absolutely. Right now, there aren’t any details to be released, but we are continuing to have more good conversations." Birchfield notes Tennessee played Virginia Tech in the first installment of the Battle at Bristol in '16. Caldwell "didn’t rule out the possibility of an NFL game" at BMS, which hosted the Eagles and Redskins in '61. But most of the interest and talks at this point have "been with college programs." Caldwell said of a possible NFL game, "We’re open to any of that and have had conversations, but we’re more focused on college" (JOHNSON CITY PRESS, 1/23).
