Washington State Pulls Request For General Alcohol Sales At Football Games

Washington State has pulled its request to "expand alcohol sales to general ticket holders at Cougar football games" following changes in "university leadership and unanswered questions surrounding the move," according to Josh Babcock of the LEWISTON MORNING TRIBUNE. WSU VP/Marketing & Communications Phil Weiler said, "Given the changes in the players involved, we need to take a step back." The school "first flirted with expanding alcohol sales throughout Martin Stadium's non-student section" in August '16, when WSU President Kirk Schulz suggested the additional sales "could help address" WSU's then-$13M athletic department revenue shortfall. Alcohol sales currently are "allowed at designated areas outside the stadium before games and during halftime," and is available in club seats and suites inside Martin Stadium (LEWISTON MORNING TRIBUNE, 1/10).

NO BEER HERE: In South Carolina, Jeff Hartsell notes The Citadel "lost money selling beer at home football games" in '17, and it is "unclear whether beer sales will continue at Johnson Hagood Stadium" in '18. The school "sold $21,718.24 worth of beer at five home games last season." But expenses to "sell the beer, including $5,000 per game in rental costs to set up a beer garden, amounted to $32,858.62, leaving a net loss of $11,140.38." The Citadel's athletic department "split the loss with corporate partner Sticky Fingers, leaving each party with a loss of $5,570.19 for the season" (Charleston POST & COURIER, 1/11).
