Names In The News

DR. DRE and music producer JIMMY IOVINE yesterday were "on hand at the Warriors’ practice facility as guest speakers for a group discussion about business." Typically, the annual meeting sanctioned by the NBPA is "spent reviewing the nuances of the NBA salary cap." However, Warriors Dir of Player Programs JONNIE WEST brought in Iovine and Dr. Dre to "help grab players’ attention" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 1/10). The music moguls were just the latest stars to visit with the Warriors this season, following ROGER FEDERER and the BB-8 character from the latest "STAR WARS" trilogy (San Jose MERCURY NEWS, 1/10).

STAYING ON TRACK: The ROBERT KRAFT-funded Kraft Center for Community Health at Massachusetts General Hospital yesterday "rolled out a specially equipped mobile van, dubbed CareZone, to bring health services to Boston residents who are struggling with addiction." The van will "rotate between two locations in the city." Kraft said that he has "been alarmed by the number of deaths statewide from opioid overdoses, which, on average, has approached six a day." The Kraft Center "covered the $160,000 cost of the van" (BOSTON GLOBE, 1/10).

CUSTOM FIT: Figure skater MARISSA CASTELLI last week after participating in the U.S. Championships in San Jose "spent Monday sightseeing" in S.F. But while eating at a restaurant with her parents that day, the window of the sport utility vehicle they had rented was "smashed and several pieces of luggage were missing." Castelli said that "most of the stolen items can be replaced, but she is devastated that two ice skating dresses, custom-made and worth more than $1,000 apiece, were taken." Castelli: "I know it happens, but it’s just so personal when you lose something like your skating dresses, because there’s only one in the world. They’re made exactly for me" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 1/10).

: Golfer MORGAN PRESSEL's 11th annual "Morgan and Friends" charity tournament to fight cancer concluded Monday after raising "an event record $1,010,622" at St. Andrews Country Club in Boca Raton. The event "featured an all-star cast of players, with PAULA CREAMER, BROOKE HENDERSON, CRISTIE KERR, BRITTANY LINCICOME, GERINA PILLER, SO YEON RYU and LEXI THOMPSON all on hand" (GOLFCHANNEL.com, 1/9).

TRAGIC CIRCUMSTANCES: The Coyotes "made a donation of $1,000" toward funeral arrangements for fan DOUGLAS TORNESE, who "died of blunt force head trauma" in a car crash on the way to a Coyotes game last month. The team also invited his daughter, JENNA, and her family to "attend a game in the future" (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 1/10).

NAMES: Former and current Knicks players yesterday “came out to give back to their community and fans.” HERB WILLIAMS, CHARLIE WARD, LARRY JOHNSON, JOHN STARKS and others “appeared alongside current Knicks players and front office members” at the Bowlmor Lanes at Chelsea Piers for the 19th annual Knicks Bowl.
