Minding My Business With ESPN Host Trey Wingo

Name: Trey Wingo

Position
: ESPN host

Where I’m from
: Greenwich, Conn.

Where I call home:
Connecticut

Focusing on right now: Sleep. My new show is a little earlier than my normal routine. So that’s the thing I’m trying to get down, and once I can figure that out, hopefully everything else will fall into place. This is a different show in that “MIKE & MIKE” sort of turned into a TV show on radio, and we’re going back to making it a radio show on TV, and I think that’s going to be the biggest difference between what was and what is.

Best advice: Be yourself. If you try to be something that you’re not, normally, you can spot that pretty quickly. For me, information has always been key. I get it. Personality is important, but if we’re not sharing interesting and vital information with the listener or the viewer, I’m not sure what we’re doing.

Must have for a new hire
: Be prepared to be uncomfortable and be prepared to hustle. Stretch yourself. Whatever you think you do and you think you do well, that’s wonderful, but be willing to take that risk and do something that you maybe think is outside your comfort zone and never say no to an opportunity. This business is changing so fast.

Execs I admire
: Former ESPN President GEORGE BODENHEIMER is a phenomenal person. George was great to me when I first got here, and I’ve always had a healthy respect for him. But there are people in other business. Talking about taking risks, look at what Amazon's JEFF BEZOS has done or Tesla's ELON MUSK. Things happen so fast in this world that those that can get ahead of the curve on certain things are absolutely phenomenal.

Book shelf
: I’m sort of a history buff so I like things that actually happened. I just finished “THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY” which was about the first and maybe most notorious serial killer in the United States.

Must-have music
: I have a wide variety of musical tastes -- anything from country to hip hop to classic ‘70s and ‘80s rock. If it’s good, I like any of it. My iPod shuffle on my iTunes account would really surprise a lot of people because there’s really a wide variety on it.

First thing in the morning
: I swear at the alarm clock, and I don’t hit the snooze button because I don’t have the luxury. Then I head into work. That’s it. Getting up and going is the most important thing. There’s no wasted time.

Food for thought: I’m not a huge food guy. I’m going to let MIKE GOLIC dominate that portion of the program. I was in New Orleans for the Super Bowl with someone who used to work for us, and he was sampling all the restaurants. And I was just trying to get breakfast somewhere. He said, “There are two types of people in the world: people that live to eat and people that eat to live.” I’m definitely in the “eat-to-live” category.

How I unwind
: When it’s warm enough I like to get out and play golf. I find that very therapeutic because it’s just me against the golf ball most times, and the golf ball usually wins. It takes your mind off everything else that going on. I also love the water. When we get away, we usually head to somewhere where the water’s warm.

Day in the life: It’s just a new normal for me. Just get up early, do the new show. On days like Monday I’ll do “NFL PRIMETIME,” and then I’ll go home and get some sleep. It’s all about developing a routine I guess. It’s about finding a rhythm that allows you to function at a high level.
