Whitecaps President Bob Lenarduzzi Admits Looking At Landing NWSL Club

Whitecaps President Bob Lenarduzzi admits that the MLS club is "continuing 'its due diligence' in regards to possibly joining the NWSL," according to Steve Ewen of the Vancouver PROVINCE. There have "been rumblings" about the Whitecaps' "interest in the league for some time." If the NWSL is "looking for a spot in Canada to put a team," then Vancouver "makes sense." The sport continues to be "well-supported" in British Columbia, with tonight's U.S.-Canada women's soccer friendly at BC Place expected to draw a crowd "somewhere in the 28,000 range." If the Whitecaps were to add a team, there is a chance Canada F Christine Sinclair would be "front and centre with it." Sinclair, who currently plays for the Portland Thorns, is "one of the most-recognizable female athletes in Canada of this generation." It is "hard to guess what a timeline for a new team getting in next year would be." The '17 NWSL regular season kicked off April 15 (Vancouver PROVINCE, 11/9).
