Soccer Franchise Notes: Precourt Ventures President Says Crew Serious About Austin

In Austin, Kevin Lyttle notes Precourt Sports Ventures President Dave Greeley met with Austin soccer supporters Wednesday night and "sent a short, direct message to those wondering about the club’s intentions." Greeley said, "We could not be any more serious about this move. When you’re talking about a privately financed Major League Soccer stadium of $150 million to $200 (million) or $250 million, that’s a serious way of saying, 'I do.'" He added, "We love where Austin is today, but we really like where it is going tomorrow" (AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN, 11/3).

DRAWING THE LINE: In Vancouver, Patrick Johnston notes a group of Sounders fans "were ejected from B.C. Place Sunday night during their team’s playoff game" against the Whitecaps and they say their "banner was to blame." Written on the banner were the words "Anti-Fascist Anti-Racist Always Seattle." After displaying it before the game and during the first half, a league official "decided the inclusion of 'anti-fascist' made the banner 'political speech' and asked that the banner be taken down." After the fans refused, saying that they "didn’t believe the banner violated MLS policy on political speech," the league official, supported by police and B.C. Place security, had Emerald City Supporters co-Presidents Tom Biro and Heather Satterberg and another fan "ejected from the stadium" (Vancouver PROVINCE, 11/3).

HEADING OUT EARLY: In Tacoma, Todd Milles notes after "agreeing six months ago to a partnership" to bring USL affiliate Sounders 2 to Tacoma by '20, the Sounders and Tacoma Rainiers announced Wednesday night they were "moving up the timeline to next season." That means starting in March '18 the Sounders 2 top will be "playing its home games at Cheney Stadium while it awaits a home of its own." Part of the reason the Sounders 2 are leaving its home at Starfire Sports in Tukwila has to do with a "pending anti-trust lawsuit" between U.S. Soccer and the NASL that stipulates all D-II home venues "have to be a minimum 5,000-person capacity." Starfire seats 4,000 (Tacoma NEWS TRIBUNE, 11/2).
