Hurricanes' Karmanos Says Sale Of Team Stalled, Questions Greenberg's Funding Ability

Hurricanes Owner Peter Karmanos Jr. on Friday said that "negotiations continue" with sports attorney Chuck Greenberg over the "proposed sale" of the team, according to Chip Alexander of the Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER. Karmanos said that he has "questions as to whether Greenberg will be able to form an investment group capable of raising the amount needed to buy the team" -- perhaps $500M or more. Karmanos: "The sale of the team is just sitting there, waiting for Chuck to say, 'Geez, I can’t raise the money.' We have a commitment to Chuck, and we’re going to see it through. And quite frankly I wish he would pick up the phone and say, ‘Geez, you know what, I can’t get it done.’ Because it looks like he can’t get it done." Karmanos added, "He can't raise the money. That's the complication." Karmanos said that there are "other interested parties other than Greenberg’s group." Karmanos: "We have like a dozen different groups. There’s solid interest all over the place." Karmanos said that he "can afford to 'sit and wait.'" However, he is 74, with a "wife and young children." He said he is trying to "get some liquidity before I kick off." Karmanos: "I hope that doesn’t happen any time soon, but I want to be prepared if it does" (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 10/28).
