Texas AD Perrin Not Yet In Extension Talks; Hoops Arena Construction Two Years Away

Univ. of Texas men's AD Mike Perrin said that his understanding with school President Greg Fenves is that he will continue as AD through Aug. 31, 2018, and he has "not had any discussions about extending the agreement beyond that," according to Chuck Carlton of the DALLAS MORNING NEWS. But Perrin said he has liked the job "even more than I thought I would" since taking over in '15 for fired AD Steve Patterson. Perrin said that he "doesn't expect any groundbreaking on a new basketball arena for at least two years." The "exact cost" could be $300-450M depending on capacity. Perrin said he "likes the Big 12." However, he "acknowledged that there could be more realignment in college football in the next decade with the expiration of TV contacts." Perrin: "It would be probably above my pay grade to speculate on changes or anything like that" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 10/14). Perrin said that a new basketball arena will come "before a south end zone expansion at Royal-Memorial Stadium." Perrin: "It's vital. Not trivial at all. I believe we need to be a basketball school" (AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN, 10/14).
