Alvarez-Golovkin Fight Generated Third Biggest Live Gate In Boxing History

The Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin fight Sept. 16 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas "generated $27,059,850 from 17,318 tickets sold," and the live gate is the "third biggest in boxing history," according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.com. The Nevada State Athletic Commission said that there were "934 complimentary tickets given out." Alvarez-Golovkin trails "two other megafights in Las Vegas." The all-time record was set by Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao in '15, and No. 2 was the Aug. 26 Mayweather-Conor McGregor bout. Golovkin promoter Tom Loeffler and Golden Boy Promotions President Eric Gomez began "negotiating a rematch this past weekend." If they make a deal, the sequel is "expected to take place on May 5, Cinco de Mayo" (ESPN.com, 9/26). Rafael noted the replay of the Golovkin-Alvarez "averaged 726,000 viewers on HBO and peaked at 840,000 viewers on Saturday night, one week after they fought to a controversial draw" on HBO PPV (ESPN.com, 9/26).
