HOUSTON STRONG: In Houston, Corey Roepken noted fans have purchased Texans DE J.J. Watt jerseys at a "high rate in the last week," moving Watt's name up 15 spots on a list produced by Dick's Sporting Goods. Watt's philanthropic efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey "appear to be the reason." Watt's jersey sales "moved up to No. 20 overall in the NFL this week." He ranks third overall among defensive players (
CHRON.com, 9/5). Watt was on ABC's "GMA" this morning and talked about his relief efforts, which have raised more than $28M so far. Watt said, “You feel helpless seeing water rush down streets that I drive down every day. I said, ‘How can I help?’ so I started to think and I said, ‘I have this incredible platform, I have all this social media and all these followers. Let's see if I can raise a little bit of money to help these people out and get some relief efforts going.’" He added, "When things look the bleakest, humanity steps up for each other. I think that there's over 160,000 people that have donated, with as big as a $5 million donation, there's also as small as $5 donation and it’s people giving whatever they can.” He said, “In a time like this when things are so difficult, you wouldn't think that seeing your favorite football player would matter all that much. But something as small as a smile, something like a handshake, a selfie, these people just light up. ... I'm going to make sure that what I do is do right by the people who donated and the people who need the help” (
“GMA,” ABC, 9/7).
