Univ. Of Nebraska Nears Completion On Memorial Stadium Wraparound Video Boards

The Univ. of Nebraska's new "pair of wraparound video boards perched in the northwest and northeast corners" of Memorial Stadium each consist of a "pair of 21-by-24-foot screens connected by a 9-foot radius -- all in Super HD," according to Evan Bland of the OMAHA WORLD-HERALD. The boards were recently "updated for the first time" since '06, and "construction is set to conclude before the Sept. 2 home opener." Nebraska Senior Associate AD/Marketing & Communications David Witty said that the boards are "unlike any setup he’s seen." Longtime Nebraska contractor Mitsubishi "came up with the design at the school’s request -- it models a project the company completed in New York’s Times Square -- and executed the concept with the help of various local businesses." A pair of ribbon boards also will be "featured along the east and west balconies" of the stadium. Bland notes the wraparound boards "can display the same image on either side or stretch one image across the entire screen." Meanwhile, the one-year-old video boards that previously "occupied the north corners of the stadium will be moved to the softball complex and ready for use this fall" (OMAHA WORLD-HERALD, 7/28).

ONE OF THE REGULARS: In Lincoln, Steven Sipple notes former Nebraska coach and AD Tom Osborne has "given up his skybox" at Memorial Stadium. Osborne: "I've enjoyed using that box for several years. But I really felt the athletic department needed to benefit from that box. It's worth a fair amount of money. It will now revert to the athletic department." Osborne has been a "regular at home games in the box" since taking over as Nebraska's AD in '07. Osborne has "continued to occupy that box since stepping down" in '12. Osborne said that there "likely will be a one-year transition period before the Nebraska athletic department makes the skybox available for purchase" (LINCOLN JOURNAL STAR, 7/28).
