Chiefs' Hunt Addresses Firing Of John Dorsey For First Time, Introduces New GM Brett Veach

Chiefs Chair & CEO Clark Hunt addressed last month's firing of GM John Dorsey for the first time and "left no doubt about whose decision it was to make the stunning change," according to Terez Paylor of the K.C. STAR. Hunt said, “The decision was mine. ... It was a difficult decision, but after a thorough evaluation of our football operations, in the long-term interests of the Chiefs I felt it was best to make a change.” Hunt, who was introducing new GM Brett Veach yesterday, also said he and Dorsey "haven’t spoken since we parted ways.” Hunt said he had a “great personal relationship" with Dorsey, and the decision was “about making the Kansas City Chiefs better." Hunt: “To have a championship team, your personnel department needs to be functioning at a very high level. The other 31 teams have a personnel department that’s functioning at a very high level.” Hunt said throughout the spring, there were "enough issues that popped up" that prompted the front office evaluation (K.C. STAR, 7/25). In K.C., Vahe Gregorian noted Hunt "generally avoided any direct reference to his reasoning but ... spread some bread crumbs." He seemed to point toward "issues with salary-cap management and to affirm" a report that the move at least in part "was fueled by issues with his internal communication and management styles." Hunt spoke repeatedly of the need to have the personnel department “operating at a very high level.” Gregorian noted the "real question now ... is how well-equipped Veach is to do whatever it was that Dorsey wouldn’t or couldn’t do to Hunt’s satisfaction" (KANSASCITY.com, 7/24).

ALL ON THE SAME PAGE, FOR NOW: NFL Network's James Palmer noted Veach has been "connected to Andy Reid since his career started in Philadelphia," but Hunt, Veach and Reid yesterday were "all insistent ... that he will have 100% control over the 53-man roster." Reid "does not want to be a part of the personnel, that will be Brett Veach’s territory” (“NFL Total Access,” NFL Network, 7/24). Reid said, "Clark evaluates myself, Mark and the GM position and we do answer to him. This is a decision Clark made. I absolutely stand by that” (K.C. STAR, 7/25). But CBS Sports Network's Adam Schein said, "Let's stop the madness here. We know the deal, it's a good deal. It's all about Andy Reid. So embrace it, Chiefs. Be better than that” (“Time to Schein,” CBSSN, 7/24).

MEET THE NEW GUY: Veach met with the media and select ticket holders yesterday for the first time, saying, "My job is to articulate the vision for next year, two years, three years. ... But I do understand the cap, and I do understand player value, and I do have a plan" (K.C. STAR, 7/25). In K.C., Josh Tolentino notes Veach "climbed the NFL ladder quickly." After establishing his "fundamentals as a graduate assistant at Delaware, he interned with the Eagles, where he made an instant impression" on Reid, who at the time coached the Eagles (K.C. STAR, 7/25).
