Media Notes

TVPREDICTIONS.com's Phillip Swann noted ESPN has decided to "terminate the ‘ESPN Buzzer Beater’ channel, part of the sports network’s continuing effort to cut costs and shift resources." Since '11, Buzzer Beater has "provided live ‘look-ins’ and analysis of college basketball games." In a statement ESPN said, "We have decided to shift resources to better position ourselves for the long-term." ESPN Dir of Communications Kristie Adler said that the decision "will not affect the 'Bases Loaded' or 'Goal Line' channels, which provide live ‘look-in’ coverage of college baseball and football respectively" (TVPREDICTIONS.com, 7/19).

HEADED FOR TV? Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee said that Tiger Woods is "washed up from a competitive standpoint," and the broadcast booth "makes sense" for him now. Chamblee: "Almost [all] of them give (TV) a shot. Jack Nicklaus gave it a shot. (Lee) Trevino gave it a shot. Lanny (Wadkins), Curtis (Strange), Davis Love (III)." He added, "Tiger is a thoughtful guy, he really is. He can talk golf swings with the best of them. He’s too important to the game not to have him around" (SPORTINGNEWS.com, 7/19).

SIGN OF THE TIMES: THE DRUM's Tony Connelly reported the BBC acquired live broadcast rights to the PGA Championship in the U.K., a "shock move that represents a seismic shift for the sport dominated by Sky's coverage." The BBC "swooped in on the rights which Sky failed to secure." The multiyear agreement will be seen as a "huge coup" for BBC, which has seen its live sports coverage "dwindle in recent years as a result of Sky's financial dominance" (THEDRUM.com, 7/19).

YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS! In London, Matthew Smith reported the BBC pays John McEnroe around $260,000 (all figures U.S.) "for his two-week stint covering Wimbledon." The "best-paid" BBC sports commentator is Gary Lineker, who is the second-best paid broadcaster at $2.3M per year. Only radio commentator Chris Evans "is paid more" (London DAILY MAIL, 7/19).
