MLB Media Notes: Rockies Fans Miss Broadcast Of Arenado's Career Game

SI.com's Stephanie Apstein notes Rockies 3B Nolan Arenado yesterday "played the game of his life" during an 18-4 win over the Padres, but the game was not televised on AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain. Arenado's five hits and three home runs "were a career high," while his seven RBI "only tied his career high." However, the RSN "televises just 150 of their games per year, and this one didn't make the cut." That is the "second fewest" in MLB. Because of MLB's deals with cable companies, even local fans who subscribe to the MLB.TV package are "blacked out from watching their team online" (SI.com, 7/20). YAHOO SPORTS' Mark Townsend notes Arenado batted in the eighth inning looking for a fourth home run, but not even MLB Network "bothered breaking into its coverage to give Rockies fans a look" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 7/20).

COMING BACK HOME: In Philadelphia, Frank Fitzpatrick noted Astros announcer Todd Kalas, "midway through his rookie season as a full-time play-by-play voice," on Monday will be at Citizens Bank Park where the home TV booth "bears his father's name." Many want to know why, despite his "obvious pedigree and the almost constant reshuffling of the Phillies broadcast team since Harry Kalas' '09 death, the son of this city's most popular broadcaster hasn't followed in his father's white-loafered footsteps." Kalas said, "Everybody asks me why I'm not back in Philly. It could have worked, I guess. But I always would have been Harry Jr. Besides, I think the Phillies are very happy with what they have." He added, "A part of me loved being a Philadelphian for all those years. But I also wanted to carve out my own niche. I just always wanted to do my own thing" (PHILLY.com, 7/18).

THE BUCS STOP HERE? In Pittsburgh, Adam Bittner writes under the header, "Pirates Fans Hitting Bob Nutting Where It Counts -- TV Ratings." The Pirates are 47-48 this season, and local ratings on AT&T Sportsnet Pittsburgh are down 27% after a 21% "decline last year." The Pirates' contract with the RSN is up in '19, and "strong ratings are key to improving upon a deal that's widely seen as a millstone." Dwindling ratings make what is "already a small media market smaller for negotiation purposes." It is hard to imagine Nutting "getting the payday he likely wants if the audience available for advertisers is a fraction of what it was just a couple of years ago." Bittner: "The pressure is on" (POST-GAZETTE.com, 7/20).

LOOK AT ME NOW: In Atlanta, Tim Tucker reported the Braves drew their "second-largest local TV audience of the season" for Sunday's series sweep of the D-backs. The win, which raised the Braves' record to .500 for the season, posted a 3.5 local rating in Atlanta on FS South. The three games against the D-backs averaged a 2.9 rating, the Braves' "second-highest-rated series of the season" (ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, 7/18).
