Overnight Ratings: Roger Federer Dominance Leads To Lowest Wimbledon Final For ESPN

ESPN yesterday morning drew a 1.1 overnight for Roger Federer's straight-sets win over Marin Cilic in the Wimbledon men's final, marking the lowest figure for the net since it acquired rights prior to the '12 event. The previous low was for Andy Murray's straight-sets win over Milos Raonic in last year's final, which drew a 1.5 overnight. Yesterday's rating is down 42% from a 1.9 in both '15 and '14, which featured Novak Djokovic winning over Federer in both years. While the rating for the complete six-hour Wimbledon telecast yesterday was down, a breakout for the match itself showed Federer-Cilic was up slightly from Murray-Raonic. On Saturday morning, ESPN drew a 0.7 overnight for Garbine Muguruza's straight-sets win over Venus Williams in the women's final. That number is down 50% from a 1.4 in '16 for Serena Williams' straight-sets win over Angelique Kerber. Williams' win in '15 earned a 1.3 rating on ESPN, while the '14 final earned a 0.7 for Petra Kvitova's win over Eugenie Bouchard.

IN THE ROUGH: Fox earned a 0.6 overnight rating yesterday from 2:15-6:45pm ET for the final round of the U.S. Women's Open, which saw Sung Hyun Park win by two shots over Hye-Jin Choi. The rating is down 40% from a 1.0 overnight in '16 for Brittany Lang's playoff win over Anna Nordqvist, which ran until 8:15pm. This marks the first time since '03 that the U.S. Women's Open was not the year's highest-rated final round of a women's golf event. NBC's coverage of the KPMG Women's Championship drew a 0.7 overnight last month.
