Spit Decision: Cubs' Javier Baez Boosts Profile With David Sunflower Seeds Deal

Cubs 2B Javier Baez, who has “emerged as one of the top 10" MLBers in endorsement deals, is “now the face" of David Sunflower Seeds, according to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY. Baez, who has signed deals worth $2M alone in the last six months, will become the first MLBer to “appear on the company’s packaging” since Derek Jeter in ‘05. It is just the “latest, but the biggest, endorsement deal with Baez since the Cubs won the World Series last year.” His jersey sales alone “rank fourth” among MLBers. He also “recently signed deals with Nike, Toyota, Apple, and was on the cover of ESPN’s body issue.” Wasserman Senior VP/Baseball Nick Chanock, Baez’ agent, said, “I haven’t quite seen a popularity explosion like this with anyone I’ve ever had. He’s got that sort of X factor. His celebrity is very authentic. You look at his face, and he can tell he’s very excited to be out there” (USATODAY.com, 6/30).
