People & Personalities: ESPN's Mike Greenberg Dishes On His New Upcoming TV Show

ESPN's Mike Greenberg said of his TV-only show on ESPN, which starts Jan. 1, "We're putting together a cast that I'll be working with, and we'll be a little more TV-centric. At its core, 'Mike & Mike' has been a radio show. Along the line, television become a priority but not the priority." He said, "Everything always had to be radio-friendly; you couldn't do anything visual. So I'm looking forward to being able to play a little with that because right now, anything we do with visual, I have to try to describe it for the listening audience. Otherwise, you're alienating half of your audience that is listening to you on the radio." Greenberg said of the show's name, "We've gone back and forth about 8 million times but have not come up with a name yet" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 6/28).

HEAR ME ROAR: GLAMOUR's Jessica Radloff wrote from issues of "pay equity to sexism in the workplace," FS1's Kristine Leahy is "speaking out about what has to change for women in the industry." Leahy said, "I would 100 percent be further along in my career if I were a guy. Not only financially but in roles on shows that I’m in." She added, "Women in sports broadcasting are traditionally sideline reporters. I’ve done that for years. I’ve proved that I can host. I have opinions. I can hold my own with men. I know just as much -- if not more -- as the men who have the same jobs as me. But I’m still paid less, and I have a lesser role. It stinks. It’s really frustrating because I work my ass off" (GLAMOUR.com, 6/26).

BEFORE & AFTER: In DC, Dan Steinberg notes viewers already noticed CBS' James Brown's "dramatic weight loss late last season," and now that total has reached 74 pounds. Brown has "chronicled smaller weight losses at various points in the past decade," but none of the previous losses seem as "dramatic as this one." Brown said that he "weighed 292 pounds in October, and is now about 218." He said that his weight-loss program was "developed by a Christian doctor, and that the numbers used all have Biblical connotations" (WASHINGTON POST, 6/28).

WHY YOU MAD? On Long Island, Neil Best wrote Fox' Joe Buck on one hand is at the "top of the profession and on the other has been catching grief from viewers for 20 years." Fans are "famous for their opinions and eagerness to share them, which is part of the fun of sports." But in the social media era, that "eagerness at times runs amok, and announcers often get hit even harder than the athletes they chronicle." What is more "frustrating to many is the seemingly irrational venom sports voices often inspire." It can be "tough out there" for sports announcers, "even for the most accomplished among them" (NEWSDAY.com, 6/27).
