Franchise Notes

SPORTSNET.ca's Elliotte Friedman wrote it is "clear now NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman wanted one owner" for the Coyotes, so the league backed Andrew Barroway buying out his partners. The league brokered a deal where former Coyotes Exec VP/Hockey Operations and coach Dave Tippett "left a significant amount of money on the table" -- around $10M -- to "get out of a situation where no one was happy." A key is that there is "no offset language," so Tippett "gets his full settlement even if someone else hires him." Bettman, along with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, also has "taken the lead on a new arena" in the area (SPORTSNET.ca, 6/27).

WINNING CURES EVERYTHING: In Phoenix, Greg Moore noted fans "seem to have noticed" the D-backs' success so far this season (50-28 record). Nearly 21,000 people on Monday "turned out at Chase Field on a weekday afternoon to see the home team face the last-place Phillies." The crowd "followed about 69,000 who came out over the weekend." Attendance had "topped 30,000 in four straight home games before Sunday's 28,000, marking a real turnaround from the low point of 12,000 against the Padres in late April" (AZCENTRAL.com, 6/26).

HOME AWAY FROM HOME: In Atlanta, Steve Hummer noted that in seven Atlanta United games at Bobby Dodd Stadium, there have been "seven sellouts." At Saturday's game against the Rapids, there was a now "typical tableau of non-stop chanting and cheering in the seats, the passion far more coordinated than it is for college football." There are four more soccer games scheduled at the Georgia Tech venue before the expansion MLS club is "scheduled to move into Mercedes-Benz Stadium." Hummer: "Only hope that opulent setting doesn't rob Atlanta United of the quaint charms that have visited this new team" (AJC.com, 6/24).
