Notes From Bristol: Wojnarowksi Starting At ESPN July 1 In Time For NBA Free Agency

SI.com's Richard Deitsch reported The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski officially "will join ESPN on July 1, which coincides the date NBA free agents can begin reaching verbal agreements with teams." It has been an "open secret in sports media and NBA circles that Wojnarowski was headed to ESPN from Yahoo, with only his start date remaining unknown." It "remains unclear when Wojnarowski will officially appear on an ESPN platform but the two most likely landing spots are the midnight SportsCenter hosted by Scott Van Pelt, or the Rachel Nichols-led The Jump program, which is likely to air during the first overnight of the free agency period." Some of Wojnarowski's staff at The Vertical "will join him, though those details are still being worked out" (SI.com, 6/26).

THE RIGHT STUFF: In N.Y., Kate Feldman notes Britt McHenry thinks her recent dismissal from ESPN "had more to do with politics than sports." McHenry yesterday "replied to a column" from OutkickTheCoverage.com writer Clay Travis addressing an SBJ piece on ESPN. McHenry wrote in a now deleted tweet, "I mean I’ve been openly Conservative...look how that ended up" (N. Y. DAILY NEWS, 6/27).

SPEAK THE TRUTH: Former NBAer Paul Pierce said he "definitely" has an interest in being a full-time broadcaster. Pierce, who worked with ESPN throughout the playoffs, said, "Talking about the game still allows me to be a part of the game, be around the scenery and the arenas. ... If somebody who never watched a basketball game actually watched one, I feel like I can really break it down to where you can really understand what’s going on out there" (BOSTON.com, 6/25).

IN DUE TIME: RAMBLINWRECK.com's Adam Van Brimmer noted ESPN MLB analyst Mark Teixeira "sees his one or two days a week in the studio as a way to 'stay close to the game.'" But Teixeira "acknowledges" his ultimate future could be "in baseball management." Teixeira "admits he's been approached about scouting and talent evaluation roles already." But he "takes the long view on baseball." Teixeira will "stay involved on the broadcasting side and evaluate management opportunities as they come along" (RAMBLINWRECK.com, 6/26).
