New 49ers GM John Lynch Sets Out To Honor Franchise's Past In His First Season

New 49ers GM John Lynch on Wednesday said that the organization will "honor their five-Super-Bowl dynasty in several ways" in '17, according to Eric Branch of the S.F. CHRONICLE. The 49ers will "re-establish what they had at Candlestick Park by recognizing the 26 players in their ring of honor." Their numbers will be "displayed on the suite tower on the west side of Levi’s Stadium." When the team hosts the Cowboys on Oct. 22, they "will have 'Dwight Clark Day'" in honor of the "most iconic play in franchise history -- 'The Catch.'” The 49ers will also have "signage recognizing Super Bowl wins, conference titles and division championships." Murals and other nods to the past "will fill the concourse." 49ers President Al Guido said the team wants the concourse to be a "museum of all the great history" of the team. Branch notes the 49ers built an "impressive museum detailing their history inside Levi’s." But the stadium, "often criticized for being sterile and corporate, hasn’t blended much outside acknowledgment of the glory days with its modern look." However, Lynch has "aggressively embraced the past" since he was hired in January (S.F. CHRONICLE, 6/2). The team is funding the $3M project and worked with Infinite Scale on the design. The adjustments to the venue, which opened in '14, were made after the 49ers surveyed fans through 150,000 phone calls and 100,000 emails, among other correspondence channels. The upgrades were announced during last night’s State of the Franchise event for 1,500 season-ticket holders at the Santa Clara Convention Center (Don Muret, Staff Writer).
