Sources: Talks To Bring Javier Hernandez To MLS Expansion Side LAFC Have Cooled

Talks to bring Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen and Mexican national team F Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez to MLS expansion team LAFC have "cooled due in large part to salary demands," according to sources cited by Jeff Carlisle of ESPN FC. Hernandez has been the subject of bids by MLS teams "several times in the past," including a period in '15. On that occasion, his desire to "remain in Europe and play in the UEFA Champions League prevented a deal from getting done." Now it is Hernandez' salary demands that have "proven to be a stumbling block." When talks between Hernandez and MLS surfaced back in February, a league source said that the annual salary would be around $9M -- "not including payment for image rights -- with the hope that the player would join the league after his contract expired in the summer" of '18. One source said the annual salary being asked is "way north of $10 million." With LAFC trying to acquire Hernandez' services before his contract expires, there would also be a "sizable transfer fee involved, all of which has effectively put LAFC out of the market for the Mexico international" (ESPNFC.com, 5/25).

HEFTY PRICE TAG: In L.A., Kevin Baxter notes LAFC’s plan to spend $30M on a training complex on the campus of Cal State-L.A. would make it the "third-largest investment in a practice facility" in MLS history. Only Atlanta United FC and Real Salt Lake, who spent $60M apiece, "invested more" (L.A. TIMES, 5/26).
