Franchise Notes

In Pittsburgh, Dejan Kovacevic writes "everything changed" for the Penguins with the arrival of Mario Lemieux as a player '84, and "it's continued almost without interruption ever since." Lemieux has been the "star, the savior, the star again and now the tone-setter from top to bottom." He and fellow co-Owner Ron Burkle "made the change at GM and coach" that has led them to a second straight trip to the Stanley Cup Final (DKONPITTSBURGHSPORTS.com, 5/26).

HOT OFF THE PRESS: In Denver, Mark Kiszla noted in the tent that serves as the NWSL Washington Spirit's gift shop, F Mallory Pugh jerseys are "so brand spanking new its price has been scrawled with a Sharpie on a 3x5 card: $120." Hanging from a nearby rack, a "Spirit shirt without Pugh's name emblazoned on the back goes for 30 bucks less." So there is the "tangible evidence of how Washington hopes to cash in on Pugh" (DENVER POST, 5/25).

SHOWING SOME LOVE: OUTSPORTS' Cyd Zeigler reported the Patriots will be a "sponsor of Gay Bowl 17." Boston's LGBT Flag Football group "shared the news during its spring season awards banquet." The Gay Bowl was created in '02 as an "annual national championship tournament for LGBT flag football teams." About 40 teams are "expected to compete in several divisions, including a women's division, from across North America" (OUTSPORTS.com, 5/21).
