Warriors' Schlenk Named Hawks GM; Expected To Have Control Of Roster

The Hawks today "announced the hire" of Warriors VP/Basketball Operations & Assistant GM Travis Schlenk for their vacant GM position, according to Chris Vivlamore of the ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION. Schlenk has "spent the past 12 years with the Warriors, including the past five" as Assistant GM (AJC.com, 5/25). Vivlamore noted the Hawks last week "got permission to speak" with Schlenk, who was also a "candidate for a front office position" with the Magic. Hawks Owner Tony Ressler announced a "restructuring of the team's front office earlier this month." Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer "lost his title of president of basketball operations" and former GM Wes Wilcox became a "special assistant to ownership." The Hawks "conducted an extensive search" for a new GM that "included many people with all facets of experience" (ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, 5/25).

TIME WILL TELL: In Atlanta, Jeff Schultz wrote Schlenk is "known as a strong talent evaluator and has been around a winning championship environment and some smart basketball people." He has also "done every job imaginable." But Schlenk has "never been the big-picture guy," so "in a sense, he's untested." Ressler previously suggested his new GM would be "given control of the operation and presumably have control over personnel" over Budenholzer. It is "not certain at this time if Schlenk also will be given an executive title like team president, or if the Hawks will move somebody else into that position." The Magic, in a "similar situation," just made two hires: President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman and GM John Hammond (AJC.com, 5/24).
