Sources: Bucks Commission Broad Search For GM After John Hammond Departs For Magic

The Bucks have "decided to commission a broad search" for a new GM after John Hammond left the team to take the same position with the Magic, according to sources cited by Marc Stein of ESPN.com. Sources said that Bucks consultant Rod Thorn will "lead the search" on behalf of team ownership, which is "hopeful of attracting strong candidates given the Bucks' on-the-rise status." Sources added that Bucks Assistant GM Justin Zanik will interview for the GM post and be "given strong consideration to succeed Hammond." Zanik has been "erroneously described in some corners as the Bucks' GM-in-waiting, but sources insist he was never promised the position by the Bucks" (ESPN.com, 5/24). THE VERTICAL's Adrian Wojnarowski cited sources as saying that the Bucks are turning to Zanik to "run the franchise's predraft process as they employ a search firm to help direct the hiring of a new top basketball executive." Sources added that Zanik "remains a strong candidate to emerge from the process" as the Bucks’ GM. The Bucks "could try to pursue elite and established" top NBA team execs, but the Magic and Hawks "found in recent searches that rival owners are largely unwilling to let presidents and general managers become candidates for comparable jobs while under contract" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 5/24).

INTERESTED PARTY
: In Cleveland, Joe Vardon reports the Bucks have "interest" in Cavaliers GM David Griffin, whose current contract expires at season's end but who is in discussions "on continuing" with the team. Sources said that Griffin and Cavaliers Owner Dan Gilbert have "spoken about continuing their partnership in recent days," though no agreement "was reached." The two sides could "potentially get serious about a new deal between the Eastern Conference Finals and NBA Finals," or further discussion could "wait until after the playoffs are over." Sources said that the Magic "expressed interest in Griffin and held informal discussions with him about their openings" for president and GM. But the Cavs "denied requests for formal interviews with Griffin" from the Magic and Hawks. Sources added that the Bucks have "not reached out to Griffin or the Cavs to speak, or for formal permission to interview him" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 5/25).
