NFL Notes: Pro Bowl Headed Back To Orlando For Second Straight Season

The '18 Pro Bowl will be played at Camping World Stadium in Orlando for the second straight year. The Jan. 28 game will air on both ESPN and ABC for the first time. The league again will host Pro Bowl Week festivities across the Orlando area (NFL). PRO FOOTBALL TALK’s Darin Gantt notes it will be “interesting to see if playing in a less-than-glamorous destination will cause more and more players to skip the event.” However, the NFL was “apparently content with last year’s experience” (PROFOOTBALLTALK.com, 5/24).

WORKIN' OVERTIME: In L.A., Bill Plaschke writes the NFL reducing overtime from 15 to 10 minutes "smacks of pandering to TV partners who don’t want longer games dragging down their Sunday afternoon schedules." It is still the only overtime in any sport that "does not guarantee both teams a chance to win" (L.A. TIMES, 5/24). THE MMQB's Andrew Brandt wrote if player safety is the "primary concern behind reducing overtime, then why play overtime at all?" Brandt: "Instead of reducing it five minutes, why not do away with the entire 15? Doing so would yield two positive net effects: 1) player safety would be served to even a greater extent, and 2) coaches would have to differentiate themselves through strategic end-of-game decisions" (MMQB.SI.com, 5/23).

NOT GOING AWAY
: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell yesterday touched on QB Colin Kaepernick still being a free agent, saying, "Each team makes individual decisions about how they can improve their team. If they see an opportunity where they feel they can improve their team, I think they do it. They evaluate their players. They evaluate their systems and coaches, and they all make those individual decisions to try to improve their team." Asked if he has talked to Kaepernick, Goodell said, "I wouldn’t be opposed to speaking to him, but I haven’t. It’s certainly something I could do, but it’s not something I have thought about" (USA TODAY, 5/24).
