Franchise Notes

In Atlanta, Jeff Schultz writes it has been "three weeks since the Hawks blew up the front office," but it is "difficult to tell if they've made any progress" toward new hires. In addition to current and former GMs, the Hawks are "considering current assistant GMs who might be strong from a personnel and/or analytics standpoint, but aren't the best candidates to put on stage." There are "too many big-picture decisions that need to be made." Leaving them to the current remaining staff (Assistant GM Jeff Peterson, Senior Advisor of Basketball Operations Rick Sund and scouts) is "not ideal" (ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, 5/24).

HOT IN CLEVELAND
: ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan said the Magic and Hawks both have been "interested" in Cavaliers GM David Griffin as a potential hire, but the Cavs "won’t let him talk to them because his contract doesn’t expire until July 1." MacMullan: "That’s fine if you’re planning on paying the man, but we know (Cavaliers Owner Dan) Gilbert has a history of not wanting to do that. ... Griffin is one of the best in the business. ... Stop fooling around and give this man the money he deserves" (“Around The Horn,” ESPN, 5/23).

TRENDING UPWARD: In Akron, Nate Ulrich writes the "down-and-out Browns think things are looking up." Browns Owner Jimmy Haslam said, "The difference between this year and last year in terms of feeling in the building is noticeably different. ... I'm highly confident that this will be the year when the Browns begin to turn around and perform at the level they should. I'm highly, highly confident we got the right guy to lead the ship, and that's head coach Hue Jackson." Haslam "credited Jackson for keeping the team's enthusiasm, morale and energy as high as he possibly could during the season from hell" in '16 (AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, 5/23).
