Padres Become Latest MLB Club To Offer Ballpark Pass For Fans Beginning Next Month

The Padres have the worst winning percentage in MLB, and have a "new promotion to get fans into Petco Park next month: Give them $99 for the first five games in June and they’ll guarantee you watch five victories," according to Jeff Sanders of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. That means patrons "will have another game added to their pass for every loss that occurs before the Padres win five games in June." The Padres Five-Win Pass -- delivered to smartphones via MLB.com’s BallPark app -- includes a $20 credit to "use on seat upgrades and includes an additional $5 upgrade credit after each Padres’ win to be used toward your next seat upgrade." The pass -- which is on sale until June 9 -- "guarantees seats in left field in sections 226, 228 and 230." The Padres are "averaging 25,002 fans per game thus far, more than 2,600 off last year’s pace through the first 23 home dates of the season" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 5/23). In San Diego, Bryce Miller writes the Five-Win Pass "clears the eye test, but struggles on the sniff test." On the surface, it is "creative." On its face, the team is "rolling up the sales sleeves to stem the turnstile tide." Miller: "This was a moment to wow. It didn't." Padres Exec Chair Ron Fowler said that he "pitched the idea -- while acknowledging a mix-bag of reaction." Fowler: "Some people like it. Some people don’t. Some people think it’s going to bring people out to cheer against the Padres (to guarantee more games). I don’t feel that way. I think we see this as something that’s a novel approach." Miller: "On one hand, the Padres are doing something. On the other hand, it feels a little like offering someone in a smoldering kitchen an atta-boy for grabbing an extinguisher" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 5/23).

ACCORDING TO PLAN
: In San Diego, Dennis Lin wrote the Padres' low payroll is "hard to ignore." There is a "general assumption" that the team's payroll will "continue to be among the lowest in the majors for another year or so, which, considering where the Padres are, is justifiable." Everyone "knew the Padres would be overmatched this season." But those "paying close enough attention know that things are, more or less, going according to plan." Lin: "Until the team is truly ready, ownership will have to ward off the temptation to acquire expensive, possibly past-their-prime veterans" (SANDIEGOUNIONTRIBUNE.com, 5/22).
