Franchise Notes

In Miami, Adam Beasley noted the renewal rate for Dolphins season tickets is the "highest it's been" since team President & CEO Tom Garfinkel took over in '13. Garfinkel expects all available season tickets will "be gone by early August," and the team "anticipates to again sell out every game this season." The Dolphins will begin the '17 season at home for "just the second time" since '11 (MIAMI HERALD, 5/20).

DEJA VU: In Ft. Lauderdale, Dave Hyde writes no matter who the new Marlins owners are, they will "face the same unsolvable problems with the same unwanted options and, most likely, reach the same unpopular conclusion." Hyde: "Scorch the earth and start over. Yes, Fire Sale IV is looming, folks." The Marlins owe eight players $95M "already next season." That would be the "third-highest payroll in team history on a team that's going nowhere" (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 5/21).

TURNING THE CORNER? In Chicago, Rick Morrissey writes White Sox fans "know by the striking lack of grousing ... that many of them are on board with the franchise's rebuild, or whatever you want to call it." No one can guarantee that newly signed White Sox OF Luis Robert will "turn into a major-league star, but it says something" that the White Sox were "able to beat out other teams for his services on the first day he was eligible to sign a contract" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 5/22).

VOTE OF CONFIDENCE: Blues Owner Tom Stillman said that he believes GM Doug Armstrong is the "right person for the job." In St. Louis, Jeremy Rutherford noted the Blues are once again "expected to be at or near the league's salary cap," which could be as much as $76M in '17-18. Stillman: "Our ownership group continues to be committed to investing in putting a competitive and ultimately a championship team on the ice, and I don't see that changing" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 5/21).
