Brewers Unhappy Over Cubs' Postponement Due To Rain; MLB Looking Into Matter?

Brewers GM David Stearns yesterday made it clear he was "not happy" that the Cubs postponed their Saturday game at Wrigley Field around 11:30am CT, only to "see it stop raining shortly afterward for the rest of the day," according to Tom Haudricourt of the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL. Stearns said, "We were a little surprised the game was called as early as it was. I’m sure they had their reasons to do it. ... That's one of the earliest games I've ever been involved with that was called." Stearns said that the home team "controls decisions over the weather before game time." After games begin, authority "shifts to the umpires." Stearns: "I’m not privy to their forecasting methods or what service they use. All I know is what they told us at the time they canceled the game. They certainly knew we preferred to play." Haudricourt notes the weather "significantly improved over the remainder of the day, to the point that the sun began to peek out by late afternoon." Brewers manager Craig Counsell said, "First time, for us, that we’ve had players treated for sunburn after a rainout" (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 5/22). Cubs GM Jed Hoyer said that "no shenanigans were involved." Hoyer: "There was no reason we didn't want to play yesterday from a baseball standpoint. Obviously we got the forecast wrong. That goes without saying. But why would we not want to play?" In Chicago, Paul Sullivan reports some Brewers "grumbled anonymously, with one calling it 'ridiculous' to call the game and force the Brewers to waste an off day on July 6th, when the game will be replayed." Meanwhile, a scheduled bobblehead giveaway of Cubs 3B Kris Bryant and 1B Anthony Rizzo will "now be given away at the makeup game July 6" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 5/22).

TROUBLE BREWING? Stearns mentioned MLB is "potentially looking into the situation." YAHOO SPORTS' Chris Cwik wrote he is not sure he has "ever heard of a rainout causing an MLB investigation." This also "isn't the first time the Cubs and Brewers have sparred this season." Following an earlier series, a few members of the Cubs "not too subtly suggested" Brewers 1B Eric Thames "might be taking PEDs." Cwik: "Could this be the Brewers' attempt at payback?" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 5/21).
