Michigan State Eyeing More Fan Amenities Over Seats For Spartan Stadium Improvements

The future of Michigan State's Spartan Stadium will be "less about how many people the school can pack into the building and more about what amenities are available to fans in and around the stadium," according to Kyle Austin of MLIVE.com. MSU AD Mark Hollis said, "What we're observing is fewer seats are needed, but amenities need to improve from the standpoint of fans." MSU is in the midst of a $13M addition to the south end zone that will include "restrooms and concession stands." That project is "scheduled to be completed" by the '17 home opener on Sept. 2. Hollis: "We're putting in a number of restrooms and expanded concession stands right now that are desperately needed. What I love about that end of the facility is making those restrooms accessible to tailgaters and then, prior to the game, flipping it for internal use." The school is also "installing permanent lights, on top of the press box and on two poles on the east side of the stadium." Hollis said that the next area of renovation for the stadium "would be its east side, which currently houses a service garage for the school's motor pool." Hollis added that he "hopes to see that side of the stadium become more of a fan area, with improved pedestrian circulation" (MLIVE.com, 5/22).

PUT ON ICE? Hollis last week said that the $18-20M addition to Munn Ice Arena has been "on hold because of a lack of donations," but revitalizing MSU's hockey home "remains 'a high priority.'" Hollis: "It’s just about getting the lead gift in place so something like that can happen." In Detroit, Chris Solari reported drawings for the planned Munn addition include a "two-story steel and glass facade to be built along the arena’s south side," as well as a "Hall of History" walkway (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 5/21).
