He's Still Got It: Topps Sees Record Sales For Derek Jeter Jersey Retirement Cards

A set of baseball cards commemorating Derek Jeter’s number retirement ceremony Sunday has become the top-selling regular-season cards in history of the Topps Now daily on-demand card service. Topps said it sold more than 13,500 cards relating to the Jeter ceremony between two base cards and a limited number of autographed cards and relic cards containing pieces of a base used in the game on Sunday. The number topped the 11,550 cards sold last year for a card commemorating Marlins RF Ichiro Suzuki gaining his 3,000th hit. The company last year sold more than 22,000 cards relating to the Cubs’ postseason run across several different releases. Topps introduced the Topps Now service at the beginning of last year, and the company has expanded the daily on-demand card concept to several other sports beyond baseball. With a base price of $9.99 per card and the limited relic cards costing as much $5,000 each, the Jeter cards generated more than $150,000 in revenue for Topps. Jeter, who retired after the ’14 season, had not previously been in any Topps Now card. Topps last fall signed Jeter to a multiyear autographed card deal.
